In Jammu v/s Kashmir regional fight, J&K loses Smart City | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 27: In the Jammu versus Srinagar fight over who of them would get the Smart City, J&K has lost the ambitious project at a time when 100 cities across India would be watching the results of government nominations in this regard. As the BJP-PDP government could not decide about which of the two capital cities of J&K were to be developed as a Smart City, it lost the opportunity to send its nominee to the Centre. It is no more a participant now. Believed to be providing a quality life to its people comparable to any developed European city, a Smart City is to be given to each state. 20 cities chosen for the project would be financed this year, sources said and added that the cities failing to qualify this year would be asked to remove deficiencies and get ready for the round 2 of the competition. Notwithstanding the fact that the coalition government had failed to send their nominations for the competition, its "Agenda of Alliance" stresses to develop Jammu and Srinagar as Smart Cities". The project has failed to take off in the state due to the regional differences between Kashmir and Jammu. "Developing any of the capital cities of the state as a Smart city would have led to discontent in the other. The government knew it and hence did not send its nomination to the Centre in this regard. It wants both the capital cities to be developed as smart cities to avoid any further regional divide," official sources said. On the issue of the central university (CU) also, there was an agitation, following which then UPA government had sanctioned one CU each for Kashmir and Jammu regions. The discontent in Jammu region continues to simmer on the issue of setting up of AIIMS here. The AIIMS was sanctioned for Jammu but it was later shifted to Kashmir, triggering anger and protests in Jammu. |
