Innocent Burhan's killing leads to complete shutdown in Kashmir | People express anger over the 'dastardly' act | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Sep 20: Normal life got paralyzed across Kashmir due to a strike call given by separatists against the killing of three year Burhan Bashir and two former militants including his father over the past two days. Reports reaching here said that complete strike was observed in Srinagar and other major towns as well as townships of the Kashmir valley. Due to the impact of strike normal life came to a standstill in the summer capital and other parts of Kashmir. As today was Sunday, schools, colleges, banks, government offices and other commercial establishments were already closed. However, as Eid-ul-Azha is just few days away most of the shopkeepers had planned to keep open their shops, but could not do so due to the strike call. While public transport was virtually off the roads, private traffic could be soon operating on most of the roads in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley. The strike call was given by the parallel factions of Hurriyat Conference and it was seconded by other separatist groups. Since the killing of three year old Burhan evoked strong reaction the separatist groups asked people to shutdown their business for today. While Burhan's father, Bashir Ahmad Bhat, a former Hizbul Mujahideen militant got killed due to the firing of unidentified gunmen on Friday evening at his Sagipora-Sopore residence, Burhan sustained injuries and succumbed to them on Saturday morning at SKIMS, Soura. On Saturday morning some locals of Devbugh in North Kashmir's Baramulla district spotted a body lying in a field. The slain was identified as Fayaz Ahmad Bhat, a Hizbul Mujahideen militant. Along with Srinagar the strike was complete at district headquarters like Baramulla, Bandipora, Kupwara, Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Ganderbal and Budgam. At the same time the strike was complete at Sopore, Pattan, Handwara, Tangmarg, Narbal, Awantipora, Tral, Bijbehara and other areas across Kashmir. Burhan's killed had led to outrage among the people of the Kashmir valley and they have voiced their concern over the killing of three year old innocent. People cutting across political ideologies have demanded impartial probe in the killing of the innocent and 'innocence' was 'murdered' with the killing of Burhan. Today's hartal was the third strike over the past nine days as strike was observed on September 12 and September 16 against varied reasons. While the strike on September 12 was against the High Court order of banning beef in the state, the September 16 strike call was given against the mysterious death of three youth whose bodies were recovered from an orchard at Dangarpora-Pattan in North Kashmir. While HM claimed that the killed youth were their cadre, police said that they belonged to Lashkar-e-Islami and were killed by HM. |
