Anantnag, Sept 20: Failure in implementation of centrally sponsored scheme 'SSA' in the state can be gauged from the fact that despite the passage of over 12 years, government Middle School in Tilwanpora Verinag continues to function from three muddy rented rooms.
Single story muddy building of Middle school Tilwan pora Verinag located in the midst of concrete residential houses is in dilapidated condition. School was established in year 2003 under SSA as primary school and later in year 2009 was upgraded to 8th standard reveal school records.
Staffers of this government-run school say that the condition of is appalling and fear it can collapse at anytime. "This building is in dilapidated condition and it can collapse at anytime. We are concerned about the safety of the children enrolled here and all the time fear of any untoward incident hunts us," Bashir Ahmad, head teacher of the school told Early Times.
He said that they are working under physiological pressure due to dilapidated condition of the school and other problems. Students too fear and are awre about the facilities which there is lacking. "This is muddy building and can collapse. Our teachers have covered the cracks developed in the building from time to time but we know we aren't safe here," Shazia, a student said, adding they don't have the facility which other schools have in vicinity. "Can you imagine three classes studying in a single room? What results you expect from such government schools," he said.
Staffers told Early Times that due to shortage of accommodation they have accommodated three classes in a single room. "8th and 7th class students study in my office," Bashir Ahmad said while pointing towards his chair and table adjusted in one corner of the room while rest space is occupied by the students.
School also lacks basic facilities including a bathroom for girl students and play filed.
"We don't have toilet for girl students, we don't have space for preparing mid day meals, we don't have water tap and we don't have play field where students can engage themselves in co-curricular activities." A Staffers said. They said that from time to time they involved locals, ward education committee and conveyed the problems to higher-ups of the department but condition of the school never improved.
"After the shifting of Girls higher secondary school to new building, we are hopeful that department might accommodate us in old building," Bashir Ahmad said.
