Threatens violence against beef ban bill; Stays mum over tax on Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage | BJP's double standards exposed, again | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Sept 20: By threatening to resort to violence if the bill against ban on beef was tabled in the forthcoming Assembly session, the Bharitya Janata Party has exposed its double standards by virtually surrendering before the coalition partner PDP when tax was imposed on chopper service to the revered Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage. On September 19, the BJP's state vice-president and Member Legislative Assembly Ramesh Arora told a Srinagar daily that, "We will in no way allow anybody to table the bill against the beef ban. We will resort to violence." Arora, who is also BJP's Kashmir affairs in-charge, said: "We will ensure that ban on beef is strictly followed." But the same party leadership has been silent on the tax imposed on Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage by the state finance department. Saying that Muslims of Kashmir should respect sentiments of Jammu region, Arora said: "We will ensure punishment to anyone violating the law." But Arora has himself failed to respect the sentiments of millions of devotees of Mata Vaishnu Devi shrine particularly the people of Jammu who voted him and other BJP leaders to power as the party has miserably failed to get the order revoked. The BJP leaders who say they won't allow anyone to table the bill on beef ban have almost bowed before those who arbitrarily imposed tax on the pilgrimage. While the party leaders including Dr Nirmal Singh were formally apprised about the imposition of "Jizya" on the pilgrimage at the September 7 Cabinet meeting, the leadership didn't dare to question the government in general or Drabu in particular over the controversial taxation. Exactly three weeks on since tax was imposed on September 2, the BJP has even not bothered to draft a formal memorandum for submission before the state government seeking revocation of the orders. Having hurt the sentiments of the people of Jammu over the pilgrimage issue, the BJP now wants to divert the attention towards a law which has been already in place for over a century. This has left the people of Jammu more furious than before. "BJP through its cheap politics over beef ban is causing insult to injury when the tax was imposed on the pilgrimage which is dearer to us than our lives," said a businessman from Jammu who goes to the Mata Vaishnu Devi shrine every month. "Jammu has developed because of boost to the economy given by the Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage. And now even as tax has been imposed on this pilgrimage, the BJP wants to divert the attention of the people from the basic issue," said a Jammu University teacher adding "this all has exposed the BJP and its breach of trust with the people of Jammu." |
