Will Pakistan listen to Farooq's sound advice ? | | | Though President National Conference and former Jammu and Kashmir chief Minister,Dr Farooq Abdullah, has given a sound suggestion to Pakistan to move forward by holding talks with India, his suggestion may have no impact on Islamabad. It is so because right from the beginning of his discourse Farooq Abdullah has asserted that Pakistan cannot get Kashmir notwithstanding its threat of attacking India with nuclear weapons. If Farooq is correct in his assessment of the Kashmir situation why should then Pakistan opt for dialogue with India for resolving all bilateral problems? If Pakistan has one and only agenda it is its desire to secure Kashmir's incorporation with Pakistan.Hence telling Islamabad that it should keep its hands off Kashmir despite threat of starting a nuclear war for annexing Kashmir may not be acceptable to Pakistan. Kashmir, according to senior political leaders, both belonging to the ruling party and those in the opposition,is Pakistan's life-line and believing that Pakistan can sit silent without getting its life line may be a dream for Farooq Abdullah.Whatever may one say about NC President but his advice to Islamabad is sound and deserves serious thought from Pakistan. Farooq Abdullah has rejected the notion that the threat of a nuclear war would solve the Kashmir issue, asserting that the region would never be a part of Pakistan and dialogue is the best way to "move forward. Admitting that Kashmir has been the main agenda as far as India and Pakistan are concerned, Abdullah said: "What is important is dialogue between the two nations to get to some point of understanding. There is no way, by threats of war or using atom bomb and saying we have nuclear weapon, that does not solve the problem. What we have to do is find ways and means, whether it is Track II or III diplomacy, to get to some position of understanding. This is one major part of Farooq Abdullah's sermon to Pakistan. The other part of his advice is his belief that borders won't change how much countries want to change it, borders will not change. And the last and valuable part his advice is his message to Pakistan it is not going to get Kashmir even if they try over the sky. That is not going to happen. So why cause further miseries for nothing. Why don't they realise it is the Muslim population dying this side. On Pakistan's threat of using nuclear weapons Farooq has stated if they bomb us and we bomb them. It is innocent people who will die. The conflict has been continuing for the last 65 years and that is why Farooq calls enough is enough and gives suggestion to both India and Pakistan to let the two sides get together and move forward rather than live in tragedies. And if Farooq remembers,he is supposed to remember,India has made the first move for holding bilateral dialogue. The moves have been made even after four wars, including the Kargil conflict, but each bid by India to defuse the conflict has not been responded or reciprocated by Pakistan. And during the last one year Pakistan has tried to sabotage or scuttle the process of dialogue either by allowing its Army to resort to unprovoked ceasefire violations on the LOC and on the IB in Jammu and Kashmir or by insisting on holding talks with Kashmiri separatists prior to the start of the bilateral talks. This is what happened to the proposed foreign secretary level talks last year and this is what happened to the proposed NSA level talks. Both these talks were cancelled. The UN and Washington has been suggesting to Islamabad to opt for sustained dialogue with New Delhi but the former is not sure of its position on Kashmir and that could be the reason for Pakistan to avoid responding positively to India's bid for r esolving all bilateral issues through the process of dialogue.Hence Farooq's sound suggestion may simply fall on the deaf ears of Pakistan. There is still time for Islamabad to review its stand, its policy, its programme nd opt for ending conflict with India by forgetting about annexation of Kashmir. If it does so nobody can prevent peace from getting restored to the region. |
