Committee formed to regulate private hospitals/nursing homes comes under cloud | Two members disassociate themselves from it | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 18: The six member committee formed by the State Government to regulate functioning of private hospitals and nursing homes in the valley has been hogged by controversy since two members have disassociated themselves from the committee. Journalist Shuja ul Haq and businessman Omar Trumboo have made it clear that they are not part of the committee that has been formed under a Government order. Shuja and Omar were supposed to represent the civil society in the committee but their disassociation means that there is no role of civil society in the regulation of private hospitals and nursing homes in Kashmir. "It is to inform for general public at larger and private hospitals, nursing homes and clinics in particular that members of Civil Society Forum Kashmir (CSFK) Omar Trumboo and Shuja ul Haq are not part of the committee constituted to inspect private hospitals as was published by Health Department in newspapers few days back," CSFK said in a statement issued here. The statement said that CSFK members have absolutely nothing to do with the committee formed for the regulation of private hospitals and nursing homes in Kashmir. The committee has been formed under the Government Order number 673/HME/2015 dated 09-10-2015. The six member committee will be headed by the Project Director, Jammu & Kashmir AIDS Control Society, Dr Saleem-ur-Rehman. The other members of committee are Medical Superintendent, G B Panth Hospital, Dr Shafqat Khan, Deputy Director Health Services (HQ) Kashmir, Dr Karim, Medical Superintendent, Bone & Joints Hospital, Srinagar and Dr Abdul Rashid Badoo. It would be in place to mention here that the formation of committee has already come under a cloud since one of the committee members is 'indirectly' with one of the un-registered nursing homes located in the Bishember Nagar of the summer capital of the State. Zahid Rashid Badoo and Imdad Ali Badoo sons of Dr. Abdul Rashid Badoo are silent partners in the Valley Ortho Craft Nursing Home. Since Dr. Badoo's sons are silent partners in the nursing home how can one expect him to be fair in the job assigned to him. Pertinently, Valley Ortho Craft Nursing Home is functioning without any registration for the past six years or so. The registration of this nursing home had expired in 2009 and since then the registration has not been renewed. However, despite the expiry of registration the nursing home is carrying out its functioning without any directives from the concerned authorities to stop the same. Sources told Early Times that the owner of the nursing home has been applying for the renewal of the registration over the past few years, but the same has been rejected on different grounds. The owner who is a reputed orthopaedician of the State had even threatened to go to court for seeking renewal of the registration of the nursing home. "The renewal of the registration of the nursing home was rejected since it did not fulfill the criteria laid down by the Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir. But to the utter dismay no action whatsoever was taken against the owner of the nursing home and it was never sealed despite flouting the norms," said sources. Sources said that some time back the owner of the nursing home threatened the higher ups of the Health Department of dire consequences in case the process of renewal of registration of the nursing home is not expedited. "For the past six years or so the nursing home has been in news for bad reasons, but still then the authorities have failed to act against the owner of nursing home. Once some punitive action is taken then it would have become a deterrent for the other un-registered nursing homes operating not only in the Kashmir valley but also in Jammu division," said sources. |
