Early Times Report

JAMMU, Oct 18: Seditionist and murderer Yasin Malik, the self-styled chairman of JKLF, on Saturday trained his guns at Kashmiri civil society groups and intellectuals and described them as opportunists, selfish and Indian agents. They are responsible for the failure of the separatist movement in the Valley, he asserted, adding that they represent only vested interests and anti-Kashmir lobby.
"Our (secessionist and sectarian) movement internally has been harmed by our literates, who should have instead strengthened it…Civil society members (are) harming the Kashmir movement under the cover of 'impartiality'…Kashmir civil society members (are) collaborators and opportunists…These people attend global conferences, talk about human rights, even go to Pakistan tell them how to run the movement and then land in Delhi to tell the Indian Government how to manage the conflict…," he reportedly said at the condolence meeting of separatist leader Azam Inqilabi's mother who died this week. "Isn't it the worst form of hypocrisy," he also questioned.
He didn't stop just there. He further lambasted the Kashmiri civil society groups and the Kashmiri literary class and said: "In our functions they do pro-freedom mantle. Many teenagers get enthused by their speeches and some pelt stones on Indian troops while some take up guns in their hands. But it is ironic that the same people don't mind attending government conferences and go to government people and ministers for petty favours…More than 27,000 registered NGOs are working in Jammu and Kashmir. Our martyrs, including young boys, are real heroes, who believed in the cause and laid down their lives for the cause. But our intellectuals and NGO practitioners are just after self-glorification".
Indeed, what the seditionist and murderer, who also hobnobs with Pakistani terrorists like Hafiz Saeed and Pakistani political class and other hostile forces for monetary gains, said he constituted the most scathing attack ever launched by any Kashmiri separatist on the Kashmiri civil society groups and Kashmiri intellectuals, notwithstanding the fact that they have always supported the separatist cause and painted India and the Indian institutions, including the institution of the otherwise highly disciplined Army, black. Yasin Malik, who do not see eye to eye with secessionists like Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Shabir Shah, to mention only a few, share platform with them occasionally for tactical reasons and runs his own money-minting shop, has become multi-millionaire overnight and the common people of Kashmir knew how this pauper turned multi-millionaire and played with their religious sentiments to grind his own axe. The common Kashmiris also know that Malik flirts with certain elements in the establishment and police department to further Strengthen his own selfish agenda.
As for the Kashmiri civil society groups and Kashmiri intellectuals, they have consistently batted for unity among the Kashmiri separatists and held disunity among them responsible for the failure of the separatist movement in the Valley. It is, however, a different story that the Kashmiri civil society groups, intellectuals, and even Kashmiri advocates and business leaders are themselves a divided lot, with some of them supporting Geelani, some of them supporting Mirwaiz, some of them supporting Shabir Shah and some of them on the side of Yasin Malik. It is also true that many a so-called Kashmiri intellectuals, who masquerade as trouble-shooters, do play a double-game - In Kashmir, they become part of the separatist bandwagon and in Delhi, they hobnob with those who could fulfill their financial needs and other requirements. Indeed, they play a dubious role and mint easy money.
However, what Yasin Malik said also vindicated those who had all along held the view that the handful of Kashmiri separatists were never popular in the Valley and that they survived and thrived because certain vested interests in the establishment were, and are, hand-in-glove with them. He only exposed himself and the weaknesses of the Kashmiri movement. It is disturbing that the political establishments in the State and at the Centre have never ever tried to call the separatists' bluff and allowed them to what they did during the past more than 25 years.
