JUs Environmental Sciences Deptt launches Save Tawi campaign | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 22: The Department of Environmental Science, University of Jammu has launched a two-day Save Tawi campaign in view of ongoing week-long Navratra festival in this winter capital of the state. Department of Environmental Sciences in collaboration with Society for Environmental Education and Research (SEER) and Centre for Environment Education and Training (CEET) organised two days Save Tawi Campaign on the banks of River Tawi during the last two days of Navratra festival when large number of devotees visit the river for immersion of Sakh along with other religious material into it. The campaign was organised to educate and aware people regarding the harmful effects of mass bathing and immersion of the religious waste material into the river, a scholar said. He said that more than 100 volunteers including students, scholars, faculty members and others participated in this event and sensitized the people regarding the growing pollution problem of River Tawi which is the major surface water source in the city. The volunteers collected the material including polythene, chunris, garlands, divas from the visitors at the entry point for proper disposal and allowed only the immersion of Khetri in the river. Initiative for conducting this campaign was started by the department in the year 2013 and since then the department organizes this event twice a year during the Navratra festival. |
