Cong confident of win, BJP in dilemma | LAHDC poll results today | | Kunal Shrivatsa
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 22: Every election wherein the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are locked in a direct contest could simply be bracketed as 'battle royale' and the polling to Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, was no exception as the two arch rivals left no stone unturned to outdo each other in this political fight to capture the seat of power in the 'cold desert'. With results of the prestigious LAHDC, going to be declared tomorrow, the BJP which made Herculean effort in a bid to dethrone incumbent Congress during the election campaign, has kept its fingers crossed for the final outcome. Though the BJP, which could win only four seats in the last LAHDC elections held in October 2010 is quite confident of snatching the LAHDC, Leh from the Congress this time around. The reason for BJP's high hopes of wresting the LAHDC, Leh from the Congress is its performance during the parliamentary polls of 2014 wherein it won Ladakh Lok Sabha seat and opened its account for the first time in this hilly region, however, winning LAHDC, Leh polls could be too big a dream for the saffron party. The biggest and foremost reason is the failure of the BJP to recreate the same magic of Lok Sabha elections in the subsequent Assembly polls held a few months later wherein it drew blank in all the four seats while its main opponent- the Congress managed to salvage some pride by winning two seats in that elections. While the BJP used all the tricks up its sleeve to woo the voters of Ladakh region in its mission to capture the LAHDC, Leh, the Congress also utilized all the resources at its disposal to counter the saffron party's juggernaut which has snatched power from the grand old party of the country not only at the centre but there after from one state to another. However, former minister and Congress Legislature Party leader in the State Legislative Assembly, Nawang Rigzin Jora's is confident of regaining the LAHDC, Leh. Jora, a three-time MLA from Leh, who single-handedly led the Congress campaign in the mountainous region where teams of leaders belonging to the BJP fanned out in every nook and corner to make the campaign more aggressive and comprehensive was more than sure that the Congress is going to win hands down. "We are going to sweep the elections….BJP will bite the dust," Jora told Early Times. When asked that is the Congress certain of getting an absolute majority in the Council, "Obviously", Jora responded assertively. |
