Dussehra celebrated with religious fervour across state
Thousands watch Ravana going up in smoke

Jammu, Oct 22: Marking the victory of righteousness over evil, Dussehra was celebrated across entire Jammu region today with effigies of Ravana along with Kumbhkarna and Meghnath going up in flames, bringing the curtains down on nine day long Ram Lila, performed every night at several places depicting Ramayan (from the birth of Lord Rama to the end of Ravana).
Huge effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhkarna and brother Meghnath (also known as Inderjeet), symbolising the evils, whose end by Lord Rama and his 'sena' led by Veer Hanuman and Sughreev is celebrated every year as Dussehra, went up in flames as at the stroke of 5.45 pm in the presence of thousands of people.
Fire laden arrows were fired in a traditional manner by the youth who acted Lord Rama in Ram Lila on the three evils, sending their effigies, specially erected by the artists from Uttar Pradesh over a period of one month, in flames with the bursting of crackers.
A huge crowd spread over sprawling lawns of Parade Ground, adjoining Sports Club, SRML higher secondary school, Police Control Room and roof tops of all houses, shops and business establishments cheered as the three effigies were burnt and sound of crackers rocked the entire City.
All roads leading to Parade Ground had been closed by the police well before the start of function. Still, hundreds of people travelled to the Ground to watch the victory of truth over evil. Before the 'jhanki' with persons acting as Lord Rama, Lakshman, Sita Mata and Veer Hanuman entered the Parade Ground, it was taken out in different parts of the City.
The main attraction of the day was the function organised at the parade ground.People thronged the venue to watch the effigies of Ravana, Meghnada and Kumbhakarna go up in flames. Many could be seen sitting on top of the vehicles parked near the venue to get a better glimpse of the celebrations. Some of them had also climbed trees.Extraordinary fireworks were displayed this time at the function.
Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Nirmal Singh has said that the festival of Dussehra symbolizes the victory of truth over falsehood and chaos and we should imbibe the teachings in order to live a life full of righteousness.
The Deputy Chief Minister was addressing people on the eve of celebrations of Dussehra held at Parade ground here today.
The function was organized by Sanatam Dharam Sabha, Jammu and was attended by Minister of State for Education, Information and Culture Ms Priya Sethi, Member Parliament Jammu, Jugal Kishore, Legialators Rajesh Gupta, Satpaul Sharma, IG, Jammu, Danish Rana, Div Com, Jammu, Dr. Pawan Kotwal, DC, Jammu, Simrandeep Singh, former Union Minister, Chaman Lal Gupta and several prominent people from different walks of life.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that the festival which has been celebrated throughout the ages is an important one of our cultural ethos symbolizing the victory of truth and righteousness over the forces of evil, destruction and chaos. "The message of the festival is very relevant in the present context as the forces of evil and falsehood are trying very hard to establish their foothold but we should collectively defeat their nefarious designs and uphold the rich cultural ethos of our nation," he maintained. hundreds of people at Parade Ground in the heart of City.
A similar huge gathering watched the end of Ravana, Kumbhkarna and Meghnath at Dussehra Grounds in Gandhi Nagar. The chariot carrying Lord Rama's character and others was taken out from Luxmi Narayan temple to different parts of Gandhi Nagar before entering famous Dussehra Ground . "The burning of the effigies of the demons clearly signifies that evil has to die. The victory of Lord Rama over the demon king signifies that evil has to end," said Girdhari Lal.
"I brought my son with me so that he could understand the importance of goodness in life", said Bano Devi, who brought her seven-year-old son.
Shouts of cheer from children rent the ground. They had accompanied their parents in large number to witness the show. A girl aged six years was heard asking her father if Ravana was a bad man. Balloon sellers did brisk business.
A similar function was organized at Sector 2 Dussehra Ground Channi Himmat in which the Minister of PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Sukhnandan Choudhary was the chief guest while Chairperson State Social Welfare Board Dr. Nirmal Kamal was the guest of honour.
Thousands of people attended the function at Channi Himmat and witnessed the torching of effigies of Ravan, Kumbkaran and Meghnath.
Festival of marking the victory of good over evil was celebrated today with religious fervour and gaiety in Bari Brahmna where the effigies Ravan, Kumbkaran and Megnath were consigned to flames.
A function was organized by Social Youth Club where the Minister for Industries & Commerce Chander Prakash Ganga was the chief guest.
Dussehra was celebrated with great enthusiasm and religious fervour at Udhampur this evening at sports stadium.
Thousands of people participated in the celebrations where the effigies of Ravana, Kumbkarna and Meghnatha were consigned to flames marking victory of truth over evil.
Minister of State for Finance & IT, Mr. Pawan Kumar Gupta was the chief guest on the occasion.
Dussehra Committee New Plot celebrated Dussehra festival in the school premises of Government Girls Higher Secondary School, New Plot. Hundreds of people hailing from the area and adjoining areas participated in the function. On the occasion State Vice President BJYM (Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha) Karan Sat Sharma was the Chief Guest and Police Station Incharge Ambphalla Rattan Singh was the Guest of Honour.
Addressing the gathering, Karan Sat Sharma said that this is the festival where the goodness triumphs over evil and portrays that every honest man and committed person always wins. Greeting people on the occasion of Mahanavmi and Dussehra he hoped that the festivals would bring peace and prosperity everywhere.
He said these festivals are a very important part of our life and they keep our culture alive and such type of programmes must be held everywhere in order to bring a bond between the society.
Dussehra is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Sunderbani like other parts of the country. This day is known for the victory of truth over evil.
Peoples in large numbers gathered army ground Sunderbani to celebrate this festival of truth. After many days ramleela play the festival celebrated today with the janki and finally by burning the effigy of Ravan, Meghnath and kumbkaran.
In Srinagar Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, witnessed the Dussehra Finale, here at Polo Ground, today evening.
He was accompanied by Minister for Finance & Culture, Dr. Haseeb A. Drabu, Minister for Education, Naeem Akhtar, Advisor to the Chief Minister, Prof. Amitabh Mattoo, Minister of State for R&B and Revenue, Sunil Kumar Sharma and MLC, Khurshid Alam.
The Chief Minister witnessed the customary burning of the effigy of Ravana, which symbolises the triumph of good over evil.
