Early Times Report

Samba, Nov 15: The students of Government Polytechnic Samba district have complained of shortage of permanent staff and basic infrastructure. The College was set up in 2012 and operated from a private building till last year. Later it was shifted to the new campus at Painthi in Samba, offering two courses in civil and automobile engineering. At present, there were over 270 students in the Polytechnic from various districts including Samba, Kathua, Udhampur, Doda, Reasi, Poonch, Rajouri, Kishtwar, Ramban and Ladhakh. The students are suffering due to shortage of permanent staff, basic infrastructure and facilities. "The construction of the college building that was supposed to be completed two years ago still awaits completion. There were only two permanent teachers in the college. The college is mainly run by guest or contractual teachers. Moreover, the post of the Principal and a Head of the Department (HoD) has also been lying vacant for the last two years," said Assif an student. The college does not have basic amenities such as toilets, drinking water, playground and hostel facility either for girls or for boys. The main approach road is also in dilapidated condition. We are staying in rented rooms or paying guest commendations in the town and travel by public transport daily. There is no proper bus service to reach the college, he said.
"There has been no proper lab facility at the college. The students are unable to gain enough practical knowledge on the subjects as the computers and other laboratory equipments are lying idle due to non-availability of trained faculty. We are facing innumerable problems, which is affecting our education. The higher authorities should look into the matter and take immediate measures in this regards," said another student. Subhash Kumar, Head of the Department of Polytechnic Samba said the Technical Education Department had sanctioned 22 posts of teaching staff. The college had two permanent teachers and the rest of the required staff has been appointed on contractual basis. The construction work of the infrastructure at the college is in the last leg and some amenities are yet to be provided. All the remaining works are going on war footing so that students do not have to face any problem, he said.
