BJP under fire in Ladakh
U-Turn on UT
11/15/2015 11:56:06 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 15: The people of Leh district in Ladakh region are chaffing. They are seething with anger. What has angered them is the U-turn that the "ungrateful" BJP took on the Union Territory status promise that it held out during the election campaign in last October.
The BJP, which contested election to the 30-member Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, had in its manifesto promised that a vote for the party would mean grant of Union Territory status to Ladakh. The Ladakhis believed the BJP and voted it to power in Leh. The BJP won 18 seats out of 25 it contested decimating the Congress party, which had been in power in Leh since 2000. The Congress could win only 4 seats, against its 2010 tally of 21 seats.
It was on November 10 that the Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, disappointed the Ladakhis by saying that the Union Government had no plan to grant Union Territory status to Ladakh. "No UT status to Ladakh at this moment and the Government has no plan for it," Rajnath Singh told selected media persons in New Delhi.
Ever since then, the Ladakhis have been accusing the BJP of cheating them and the party which has been attacking the BJP is the Congress party. On Saturday, Leh district Congress president and ex-MLA T Samphal launched a scathing attack on the BJP. Dismissing the BJP as a party of betrayers, Samphal said that the Congress had already told the Ladakhis that the BJP will let down them in case it was voted to power.
"The outright rejection of UT status to Ladakh by the concerned highest office of the country, Union Home Minister Rajnath Sight on November 10, 2015 at New Delhi has vindicated our stand that BJP has cheated the people of Ladakh in the General Elections of Parliament and State Assembly in 2014 and the Hill Council in 2015 to woo voters from the innocent Ladakh," said Tsering Samphal.
"Their slogan of 'Vote for BJP and UT for Ladakh' has proved to be a broad day-light white lie for which the local BJP MP from Ladakh, Thupstan Chhewang, and the leaders should apologize to the people of Ladakh for this cheating. The Government has maintained double standards vis-à-vis different regions. One of the tallest leaders of the BJP, Nitin Gadkari, had publicly announced at the Polo Ground, Leh, in 2014 that UT for Ladakh will be a reality in 6 months and after one and a half year, the Home Minister has rejected the demand outrightly," Samphal further said.
Samphal charged the BJP with playing with the sentiments of Ladakhis and added that "in view of the over-all critical political situation of the State of J&K where the three regions have different aspirations i.e. Statehood for Jammu, Autonomy or Self Rule for valley and UT status for Ladakh, Congress leaders in Ladakh are firm on their stand that Ladakh as a region is a strong stakeholder for UT status".
All this shows that the BJP has not only annoyed the people of Jammu province by bartering their interests to come into power in the State but also the people of Ladakh. The BJP will become totally irrelevant in the State in case it continued to treat its constituencies in the manner it has been treating them after coming into power.
