Two people die of heart attack following strong tremors across J-K | | | S Tahir-ul Haq Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 26: Two people died of heart attack as an earthquake shook Jammu and Kashmir during the intervening night of December 25 and 26. A senior police official here said that 6.5 magnitude earthquake shook the general public which had epicentre in Afghanistan. The official said that tremors created panic among the general public of Jammu and Kashmir. "A local resident of Dangerpora village in Baramulla district Syed Younis Shah 42, who worked in a bakery shop at Lar village of Ganderbal district died due to heart attack after the earthquake," said the official. The official said that Younis had rushed out of his residence and collapsed outside as people ran out of their homes in fear, adding that after legal formalities his body was handed over to his relatives' for last rites. The official further said that another civilian of Gulatha Harni village in Mendhar region of Poonch district also suffered a shock during the earthquake. He was identified as Zarid Ahmad 32 who also rushed outside his house along with his family members, and suffered a shock and died on spot, official said. A senior official of MET said the earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale jolted Kashmir causing widespread fear and panic among the general public. The official said that the earthquake occurred at 12:45 am, the epicenter of the tremor was in Hindkush region of Afghanistan and the depth was 186km down to earth. It has been learnt that people were forced to come out of their bed in sleep after tremors were felt in other parts of Kashmir valley including Srinagar district, which has also created fear psychosis among the masses. Meanwhile, there are also reports from Jammu region where it is said that residents were in the grip of fear due to earthquake, as the residents thought that it was like a massive explosion outside their residential buildings. However no loss of life has been reported except these two deaths from anywhere in the state till the last reports came in. It is pertinent to mention here that more than 40,000 people were killed across divided Kashmir and properties worth billions destroyed in a 7.6 magnitude tremor that hit Jammu and Kashmir on October 8, 2005. |
