J&K ill-prepared to face any eventuality in case of earthquake | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 26: Last night's 6.5 magnitude earthquake is a warning signal for Jammu and Kashmir because despite being in high seismic zone, the successive governments have failed to take any step to face any eventuality. Neither our hospitals nor the disaster management departments are equipped enough to face any situation. Ironically, successive governments have never learnt any lessons from 2005 devastating earthquake which claimed large number of lives in the State. It is fact that that J&K comes under Seismic Zone 5 but authorities have not made any arrangements to inform the people at the time of earthquake to come out. Last night which 6.5 magnitude earthquake rocks the state there was no siren or sound from the side of the authorities to inform the people about the quake. It is widely perceived that serious efforts were taken by those who are at the helm of affairs to strengthen disaster management wing to face any such challenge. Even the disaster management ward of Government Medical College Hospital Jammu is ill-prepared for any such situation. According to official data most parts of the Kashmir Valley, which is around 11% of the area of the state covering the Districts of Srinagar, Ganderbal, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Budgam, Anantnag, Pulwama, Doda, Ramban, Kishtwar, come under Seismic Zone 5, where around 50% of the population of the state lives. The rest of the state, including the whole of the Ladakh region and Jammu Division (90% of the total area of the state), are under the Seismic Zone 4. Being very close to the Himalayas, Srinagar faces heavy risk of earthquakes, high as well as moderate. The friction between the Indian and the Eurasian plane causes earthquakes to occur on the areas close to the Himalayas. According to report strong tremors were felt in many parts of country after an earthquake of 6.5 magnitude on Ritcher Scale struck northeast Afghanistan near the country's borders with Pakistan and Tajikistan. According to the US Geological Survey, the quake measured 203.5 kilometres deep and struck about 280 kilometres northeast of the Afghan capital Kabul. Jammu and Kashmir also felt the tremors. People in the Kashmir region rushed to safety in chilling cold after feeling the quake. Soon after the earth shook, people ran out of their houses in the open as they feared that the buildings might collapse. Reports of earthquake spreading panic also poured in from other districts of Jammu region. Mobile network also faced congestion with worried relatives calling each other to inquire about the well being of their family members. |
