Mafia sabotaging all attempts to check food grain pilferage in remotest areas | Needy people worst victims of unabated thefts of Govt ration | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 26: There is competition among Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and BJP to take credit of the implementation of National Food Security Act (NFSA) in the State but the coalition government has not taken any step to investigate the previous scams in the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department (CAPD) department. City is flooded with hoarding which reflects race between two coalition partners to take credit of the NFSA but real questions still remained unsolved. Without taking effective steps, there will be no scope of curbing ration pilferage in the remotest and far-flung areas of the state. As the authorities were failed to control theft of ration usually transported for the remote areas, the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) Department had with much publicity announced to introduce advanced gadgets a couple of years back to stop such thefts but nothing has been done so far. The then CAPD Minister Qamar Ali Akhoon had announced to introduce IT in the public distribution system through a tie-up with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), besides launching GPS tracking system for vehicles carrying foodgrains to different destinations. Most of the times vehicles hired for transporting foodgrains to remot areas go "missing" in official records as these vehicles do not reach the destinations after they leave Jammu. Credible sources said that Akhnoon, who is known for his honesty, had tried his best to introduce advanced gadgets to check thefts of food grains meant for the poor and deserving people. "There is a strong mafia operation in the state with the connivance of some officers/officials of the CAPD and this mafia has sabotaged all attempts of the government from time to time to check food grain pilferage", sources said and made it clear that NFSA is not going to give any relief to the poor and needy people of the remotest areas unless authorities dismantle this mafia comprised of some politicians, carriage contractors, CAPD officers, mill owners and depot holders. |
