J&K witnesses upsurge in sexual harassment cases | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Dec 26: J&K, which was once considered safe for women, has witnessed an upsurge in sexual harassment incidents with seven cases of such offences getting registered on an average every day in the state. According to a report National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a copy of which lies with Early Times, J&K contributes 1.5 per cent to the total rape crime to the country. The report reveals that 2009 cases of sexual harassment were registered in J&K under IPC during 2014. 332 rape cases, 20 cases of attempt to rape and 1,421 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage their modesty were registered during 2014 in the state. The report says that 14 cases of rape were registered in the age group of 6 and 12. In the age group of 12 and 16, 11 rape cases were registered while 12 cases were reported in the age group of 16 and 18. The maximum rape cases, ie 204, were registered in the age group of 18-30, 86 in the age group of 30-45 and 5 above the age of 45. The report reveals that 36,375 rape cases were registered across the country during the previous year. Official sources said majority cases of rape and sexual harassment 'go unreported in the state as rape victims don't find the courage to speak and prefer to remain silent'. In Kashmir, 1057 cases of molestation and harassment of women were registered in 2013 while during 2014, the number reached to around 1300. Police had registered 759 and 823 such cases in the Valley during 2008 and 2009 respectively. In 2012, police had registered 1077 cases of molestation and harassment of women. Most often, cases of women harassment go unreported either due to remoteness of the location or victims choosing to stay silent out of fear or social stigma attached to such cases. "Very little percentage of crimes against women goes reported as women mostly prefer to remain silent without lodging compliant. Women mostly face harassment outside at their workplaces, including some educational institutions," a senior police official said. He said rape crime had shown an upward trend for the last few years in the state which was a cause of concern for the society. "A decade ago, hardly any case of women harassment was reported at police stations, but now there has been abrupt increase in such incidents," he added. |
