BJP fails to fulfill promises made with farmers | Dry spell likely to add to their woes | | G S Asgotra
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 15: While the BJP-PDP coalition government has miserably failed to come true to its commitment made with farmers in the last budget session to abolish Aabiyana (irrigation tax) and waive off 50 per cent loan on Kissan Credit Cards (KCC), the dry spell is likely to add to their woes. Due to the continuing dry spell, farmers, especially those of Kandi areas of Jammu, are facing a drought-like situation which has put them under stress. The callous approach of the department concerned could be gauged from the fact that the department of Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) had already collected Aabiyana from the farmers of the state, with 15 per cent increase from previous irrigation tax which was abolished by the government in budget session of 2015, official sources said. "However, the government had claimed that it has earmarked Rs 150 cr for waiving off the farmers' loans on KCC up to Rs 1 lakh and is also going to eradicate the irrigation tax but the situation on ground is altogether different," said Mandev Singh, a farmer of R S Pura. Singh said during the budget session, finance minister Haseeb Ahmed Drabu had announced to waive off Aabiyana, terming it as a symbol of feudalism and saying that the collections from this irrigation tax were less than the cost of collection. It is pertinent to mention here that the farmer community has lost three main crops in two years due to weather vagaries including flood devastation in September 2014, incessant rain and hailstorms of April 2015 and now low price of paddy has virtually broken the backbone of farmers. "Unfortunately one more calamity in the shape of dry cell is looming over the farmers' heads, but the department concerned seems unbothered", said another farmer. |
