All nurseries in Mendhar, Surankote, Mandi, Poonch, Ajoit and other areas of the district were without plants and only grass is visible on the ground. Borewell is shut for the last ten years and its motor has been turned defunct due to official apathy. The machinery/equipment has not been maintained since long, the sources said. When contacted, DHO Mohammad Iqbal Bhatti admitted that seven gardeners have been sent on field duty and no one looks after the nurseries as there was shortage of staff. It is pertinent to mention that no equipment was made available to the gardeners so that they could maintain the nurseries. Chief Horticulture Officer Poonch RK Koul said the land registered in the name of "influential" persons will be cancelled and the encroached land of the department will be retrieved. Koul said an official inquiry shall be initiated soon against the people involved in the nexus. He also admitted that there is shortage of staff in the department and when need arises field staff is shifted from one place to another. |
