18 'unsung heroes' lay down their lives in Ladakh | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 6 : As many as 18 'unsung heroes' (porters), essentially meant to assist in maintenance of logistics & supply chain in the combat zone, have laid down their lives on Line of Control (LoC) in Ladakh region, particularly in worlds highest battle field Siachan, where a porters recently lost his life.The locals of Ladakh have always contributed significantly in all the conflicts with Pakistan since 1947, Defence Ministry spokesman Col N N Joshi said here today.He said 18 porters have lost their lives in the line of duty to nation since the start of Operation Meghdoot in 1984. There are large numbers of local civilians who work as porters and mule carriers in the Ladakh region. He said while porters are essentially meant to assist in maintenance of logistics & supply chain in the combat zone, they have fast trained and multi skilled themselves in doing many tasks such as snow scooter driving, equipment management including generator sets and load carriage. The significant aspect in which porters have contributed in the frozen frontier is in rescue operations and casualty evacuation, he said. When Nima Norbu,a porter who had lost his limbs in the glacier was asked about the fear of going to the glacier, he replied, We never fear the mountains or glaciers. They are our natural abodes. My friends continue to go up and they will continue to help the Army. After all, the Army is here to protect us Ladakhis. The dedication and devotion to the country has often earned them commendations from the Army Chief and GOC-in-C Northern Command on various occasions |
