Kishtwar, Mar 6: The inhabitants of Fareediya Mohallah and Hidyal living in the close vicinity of PHE Hydraulic Division here on Saturday held a protest against PHE department over its failure in providing adequate supply of drinking water to the localities, besides blocking the road.
When despite repeated requests to PHE authorities, the problem was not solved, people, including men, women and children today held a protest against the department and blocked the main road, plugging all entry and exit routes.
"The department last year promised people to lay water pipes, especially in ward No 1 from Gudhali Chowk. While pipes have been dumped in the area, any work to lay them is yet to start," said Wasil Doolwal.
The protest had become imminent due to the indifferent attitude of the department towards them, he said and regretted that the authorities concerned had taken no note of the water crisis in their localities.
Alleging that some people had taken illegal connections from the main water supply lines, he said these should be immediately disconnected. The drinking water problem was likely to escalate in the days to come due to no snowfall this year, so the department must draw a comprehensive plan for tackling the issues," he demanded.
The protesters also hailed the early Times report, highlighting alleged rampant corruption in PHE. They warned to intensify their stir in case the problem was not addressed by Tuesday next.
"When we protested last time, police registered case against us. Let them register the case this time again. We are ready to go to jail," said the protesters who later lifted their dharna on the assurance from senior police and PHE officers that their meeting with the deputy commissioner would be fixed after he returned from Jammu where he had gone to attend an official meeting.
The meeting was being fixed so that their genuine demands were addressed.
