Wants PDP to elect Legislature Party leader first | BJP may lose the plot by 'annoying' Mehbooba | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Mar 6: Despite Peoples Democratic Party Chief Mehbooba Mufti dropping enough hints about she being ready to form the government the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is trying "spoil the party." Sources told Early Times that BJP has got it conveyed to the PDP that it should elect Mehbooba as the Legislative Party leader to end the political stalemate in the state. "BJP is committed to implement the Agenda of Alliance and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announcing Rs 80,000 Crore for development of Jammu and Kashmir is an ample proof of our sincerity," a senior BJP leader said. The leader said return of power projects from NHPC to state and a few other issues that the PDP has raised "Can be discussed between the central and the state government later." "First, the government should be formed, and then these issues can be taken up and discussed with the Centre. These issues can't be discussed with a party," he added. PDP insiders said that BJP's "tough posturing" can lead to the party President changing her mind as she has decided to compromise with BJP after her party legislators pleaded her to form the government. "Mehbooba has been reluctant from day one and had even made up her mind to call it quits and say goodbye to BJP," sources added. "BJP is not in a position to put conditions as they have lost the ground in Jammu region, where they bagged 25 out of 37 assembly seats in 2014. If mid-term polls are held BJP won't be able to repeat its 2014 performance," said an analyst. He said, "Ball is in the court of BJP and it should make the first move. If it fails to do so there is every possibility of BJP missing the bus." A PDP leader said, "We had sent two senior leaders of the party to Delhi to hold negotiations with the BJP leadership and to end the stalemate over government formation in Jammu and Kashmir but talks lasted for two days without any results." He said, "BJP leaders had made us understand that they are ready to accept some demands to start with. Now they have backtracked from their commitment and want us to elect the Legislature Party leader." A political analyst said, "BJP trying to play big brother could prove counterproductive for the party. PDP has nothing to lose if midterm polls are held. PDP would bounce back as Mehbooba would become the first politician in the history of Jammu and Kashmir to give up Chief Minister's post for the sake of people. Her mantra is clear people first chair later." |
