Body of soldier buried under avalanche recovered in Kargil | | | kargil, Mar 20: Body of a Sepoy Vijay Kumar who was buried under a snow avalanche has been recovered after three days in this border town of Ladakh region in Jammu and Kashmir, a defence ministry spokesman said here this afternoon. Colonel N N Joshi said that an avalanche, triggered by a mild earthquake, hit an Army Post located at an altitude of 17,500 feet in this Sector of Jammu and Kashmir at about 2245 hours on March 17. He said two soldiers who were on surveillance duty were washed away in the avalanche. Immediate rescue operations were launched in which one soldier could be rescued who was shifted to hospital where he was medically stable and is recovering. Rescue teams of the Army on the third day of a gruelling search operation, managed to recover the mortal remains of Sepoy Vijay Kumar from under 12 feet of snow. The search operation continued for three days despite adverse weather conditions and upto 15 feet of snow in the area of avalanche. Avalanche rescue dogs, deep penetration radars and metal detectors were also pressed into service in the rescue operation. The martyr, who belongs to Vallaramapuram village of Thirunelvelli District of Tamil Nadu, is survived by his parents and two younger sisters. Army is in the process of evacuating his mortal remains from the area after which they will be moved to his native place where the cremation ceremony will take place with full military honours. Sepoy Sujit, the soldier who was rescued on the first day itself is medically stable and recovering well.
