Agenda of Alliance changes to Agenda of Governance'

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Mar 20: After a flip-flop over government formation in Jammu and Kashmir, the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday hinted that there is still a possibility about BJP joining hands with its
estranged ally Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking on the issue of government formation in Jammu and Kashmir on the second day of Bharatiya Janata Party''s national executive meet in New Delhi, Jaitley said: "We stand fully committed as far as the agenda of governance is concerned with reference to JK."
Jaitley's statement comes two days after the BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav said that "no preconditions" are acceptable for government formation in Jammu and Kashmir and possibilities of BJP joining hands with PDP.
The Union Finance Minister's statement that BJP is committed to "Agenda of governance" is a clear indication about the fact that PDP should stop raking the political issues and focus on governance.
Pertinently, the PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti during her meeting with theBJP Chief Amit Shah in New Delhi had raised the issue of power projects and had insisted that Centre should return them as agreed in the Agenda of Alliance. "Mehbooba had told Shah that Jammu and Kashmir is a sensitive state and India should initiate a dialogue with Pakistan to ease the tension between the two countries," sources said.
They said that BJP central leadership has made it clear to PDP that if it is interested in forming the government in Jammu and Kashmir it should concentrate on local issues and governance and leave the foreign and international affairs to Central Government. "PDP cannot dictate foreign policy. Nor is Narendra Modi government interested in giving space to anti-national elements and separatists. Nor can be any of the power project be returned to JK overnight," said a BJP leader.
Sources revealed that senior PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Beigh has volunteered to defuse the crisis and is trying his best to restart the negotiations with BJP. Soon after Madhav announced that government cannot be formed in JK, Beigh had issued a statement to douse the fire saying, "PDP has not set any pre-conditions and it wants BJP to implement the Agenda of Alliance."
Insiders said that Jaitley has responded to Beigh's statement by saying that BJP is committed to "Agenda of governance." "The Union Finance Minister has drawn the line and has put the ball in PDP's court. If PDP is interested in running the state affairs then it would have to work within the given framework," he added.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "BJP is trying to regain the ground that it has lost in the Jammu region as a few BJP leaders in JK have been opposing the PDP-BJP alliance from day one and they want it to end as soon as possible."
Referring to Jaitley's statement the analyst said, " He has made it clear that PDP has to fall in line if it wants to rule JK."
