NH blocked for 4th day due to sinking of land at Batote | | | Tahir Mushtaq
Early Times Report
ramban, Mar 20: The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed to vehicular traffic for the fourth consecutive day today due to the sinking of land at Batote and some other places in the district. While the highway was made operational for one-way traffic between Ramban and Banihal, the road caved in at Batote due to which traffic remained suspended between Batote and Jammu. Official sources said that hundreds of passenger vehicles and load carriers were stranded on the highway due to caving-in of around hundred metres of road near Batote town. Due to the sinking of land, six houses were completely damaged while around a dozen others, including structures inside CRPF 48 Bn cantonment, too suffered damages. There was, however, no report of loss of any life. District Development Commissioner (DDC), Ramban, Bashir Ahmed Dar reached the spot to personally assess the situation. While the administration assured that it would help those whose houses had been damaged, the affected families alleged that it had so far done nothing to rehabilitate them. They said the continuing rainfall had been adding to their woes and it was very difficult for them to cope up with the situation. The DDC said the government men and machinery were on the job of making the highway operational. Weather permitting, the road would be cleared soon and the stranded vehicles would be allowed to move towards their destinations. "Our first priority is to make sure that the stranded passengers reach their destinations safely. After that the two-way traffic will be restored," he added. |
