Beig to meet Azad today

Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 20: In the wake of virtual refusal by the Bhartiya Janta Party to align with People's Democratic Party, some significant development is likely to take place by tomorrow between Congress and Mehbooba Mufti's party for formation of Government in Jammu and Kashmir.
Even as both the parties have activated their channels for a possible coalition to stake claim for the formation of Government with Mehbooba Mufti as Chief Minister, some breakthrough is likely to be achieved during a possible meeting between senior PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Beig and Ghulam Nabi Azad, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha.
According to the highly placed sources, the meeting between these two leaders is likely to take place tomorrow at New Delhi after the return of Ghulam Nabi Azad from Assam. Though both the parties are tightlipped over the possible development, sources claimed that Mr Azad has agreed for meeting with Mr Beig, who is on the mission with consent of Mehbooba Mufti.
Pertinent to mention that after the death of then Chief Minister Mufti Mohd Sayeed, PDP has 27 MLAs in the Legislative Assembly while the number of Congress MLAs is 12. Both the parties are confident of securing support of five independent MLAs, including Pawan Gupta and Engineer Rashid, thus taking their total number to 44 for formation of Government in the State.
Even as PCC president G A Mir and other senior leaders of State Congress, including senior vice-president Sham Lal Sharma are averse to forming Government in coalition with PDP at this juncture and instead favouring a wait and watch policy, sources said that the elected MLAs and nominated MLCs of the party are openly supporting the move for coming to power.
Interestingly, all those supporting the move on Government formation, belong to Ghulam Nabi Azad camp, who holds the key on any development in this regard, sources explained and added that the situation would become more clear after the possible meeting.
