Swachh Bharat campaign fails to help Dal lake | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 26: The much hyped Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) might be changing lives of people in different parts of the country, but for the dwellers of Dal Lake , this countrywide mega sanitation campaign has hardly made any impact. The garbage which gets accumulated in Dal lake is hardly collected on daily basis by the municipal authorities , with the result all the non biodegradable waste which includes plastic and polythene gets accumulated inside the Dal Lake. Early Times correspondent travelled deep inside Dal lake and spoke to large number of people there. "There is no mechanism to collect the garbage from various localities inside Dal lake and people are forced to through all the polythene and other waste material inside the lake. Had authorities developed a mechanism to undertake door to door collection of garbage with proper segregation , things would have been different today" says Ghulam Hassan Batkoo a resident of Dal lake while talking to Early Times. "The Swatch Bharat Mission (SBM) is making a great impact in many states but the authorities who are involved in sanitation and cleanliness work in our state are murdering this mission by getting involved in all sorts of illegal acts which causes a direct to the public health. Our environment is also a direct victim of these illegal activities. We appeal the Mehbooba Mufti who would take up charge of Chief Minister soon , to give a special focus on door to door collection of garbage at least in selected localities of Dal lake " said Dr Mushtaq Khan a well know RTI and Social activist from Srinagar. The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) and Lakes and Water Ways Development Authority (LAWDA) are supposed to undertake sanitation work inside the Dal lake. Locals allege that these authorities hardly do this kind of job. They have urged upon SMC and LAWDA to keep at least three to four boats available for collecting segregated garbage in various residential areas of Dal lake. It is pertinent to mention that Sewerage Treatment Plants established at a cost of Rs 20 crores (STP's) located around Dal Lake are defunct from last many years. Instead of treating the sewerage at these plants , the sludge is carried in tankers and dumped near Shalimar Foreshore road. |
