Portfolios divide coalition partners
Mehbooba meets Governor twice as BJP demands 2 more ministries

Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 26: As the BJP remained adamant on its demand to have two more ministries in the new Council of Ministers, the President of the Peoples Democratic Party Mehbooba Mufti and Chief Ministerial candidate Mehbooba Mufti called on Governor NN Vohra for the second time in a day here on late Saturday evening and discussed the emerging situation with him, sources told Early Times.
Party insiders revealed that the late evening meeting was held after the differences cropped up between PDP and BJP leaders over the portfolios to be divided among the ministers.
Sources claimed the BJP demanding two more portfolios compelled PDP President Mehbooba Mufti to discuss the issue with the Governor NN Vohra.
This was second meeting in a day as in the afternoon PDP President accompanied by the party leaders Tariq Hamid Karra and Muzaffar Hussain Beigh in presence of BJP leader Nirmal Singh staked the claim for government formation.
However, Mehbooba Mufti dodged the query over portfolios. "Our portfolios are also that of BJP and BJP's portfolios are also of ours. What differences would we have on portfolios? It is a coalition government, we are not separate entities" she told reporters after staking claim for government formation.
BJP and PDP said that the two coalition partners would discuss the dates of swearing-in ceremony. BJP said the two partners have to discuss certain issues and modalities.
"I am thankful to the BJP party for extending unconditional support to us in the formation of the government", Mehbooba Mufti said.
"We have handed over the letter of support to Government as per the decision of our Legislative party," said BJP leader Dr Nirmal Singh.
"In times to come there are certain modalities and issues, which need to be discussed and process of government formation will move ahead", Singh added.
According to sources the BJP is firm on its stand to get some plum ministries and equal share in the Cabinet.
Sources said BJP is demanding the Finance ministry and MoS be given to it but the demand has been turned down by the PDP leadership and the BJP leadership has been conveyed that further delay would hamper the Government formation in the state.
Sources said after the cropping up of fresh controversy over the portfolio distribution between the two coalition partners BJP high command had issued instructions to state leadership to delay the meeting with Governor by one day but this led to further controversy in BJP camp as some senior leaders who were supposed to accompany BJP Legislative Party leader, Dr Nirmal Singh, were of the opinion that they should go as per High Command's directives. However the PDP leaders insisted that that they have to meet the Governor today which prompted Dr Nirmal Singh to leave for Raj Bhawan all alone to submit the letter of support of his party to PDP, sources added.
They said moreover there are some controversies within BJP over portfolios as party is not satisfied with the performance of some former ministers and the High Command had also favoured their replacement by other MLAs. This way axe may fall on two to three BJP ministers and new faces would be inducted in the cabinet, sources added.
They said even PDP is reluctant to give lion's share to BJP in Boards and the same too was conveyed by PDP leadership to its coalition partner. This has annoyed the BJP and under the prevailing circumstances the BJP has not been left with any other option other than to remain content with what PDP offers it.
