Handicrafts deptt disrespects women artisans
Director assures action, terms the incident 'disgusting'

Anantnag, Apr 1: Director Handicraft's department, Gazanfar Ali on Friday assured action against those officials of the department who disrespected women artisans during an awareness program held in Mattan area of this southern district.
Gazanfar Ali, (KAS) termed the incident disgusting and said that action will be taken against the involved officials.
"It is disgusting. Will take action definitely," Director Handicrafts wrote on WhatsApp in response to this reporter.
He thanked Early Times for publishing the story titled 'Handicrafts department caught on wrong foot' and bringing out in depth details.
Joint Director Handicraft's department, N A Bhat too assured that he will look into the incident. "I will seek a report from Assistant Director Handicrafts Anantnag who organized the orientation program." Bhat told Early Times.
Pertinent to mention here, officials of the Handicrafts department are facing sharp criticism for disrespecting the female artisans during an awareness program.
A Photograph showing employees sitting on chairs and female artisans on floor in awareness camp organized is irking netizens and activists who are working hard to revive the handicrafts industry in the state.
The photograph has gone viral on social networking sites' including Facebook and anger is brewing against the department for disrespecting the female artisans. Pertinently, Ministry of Textiles GoI and Jammu Kashmir Handicrafts department has a plethora of welfare schemes for dedicated artisans to revive and promote famed handicrafts.
Locals activists are of the opinion that welfare schemes only can't prove fruitful till artisans aren't given due respect. "Money is not the solution, we have to give due respect to artisans for the revival of the industry," Rao Farman Ali Malik, noted writer and activist said while addressing a seminar organized silk consultancy group in Dak Banglow Anantnag, a mother earlier.
