srinagar, Apr 1: Hindustan Zindabad, Pakistan Murdabad slogans reverberated today at National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar following a dispute between two groups of students over a cricket match played between India and West-Indies on Thursday, prompting authorities to close down campus till further orders.
Non-Kashmiri engineering students of different states of country who on Thursday late evening had entered in to a conflict with few students from Kashmir post Friday congregational prayers marched amid lawns of NIT at Hazratbal Srinagar and raised slogans like "Hindustan Zindabad, Pakistan Murdabad".
Students wishing anonymity told Early Times that after India was defeated by West-Indies in T-20 Semifinal late Thursday evening some Kashmiri students celebrated win of West-Indies within NIT campus and their celebrations did not augur well with some non Kashmiri Students which ended in a verbal clash between two groups. They said that situation was brought under control by some Senior students from both sides and normal class work began on Friday morning, however to their surprise post Friday Prayers today they saw some non-Kashmiri students marching amid NIT lawns allegedly damaging infrastructure and raising anti-Pakistan and pro-India slogans.
Some non-Kashmiri students expressing their unwillingness to take part in protest march said that a few students from both sides are responsible for disrupting environment in the campus and sought strict action from authorities against all those involved in the conflict. They said that as usual they lived in friendly manner with their local Kashmiri Students post T-20 cricket match played between India and West-Indies on Thursday and are hardly interested in anything other than their career at the moment.
Students said that some unruly students from both sides roughed each other after entering in to verbal clashes today and their action prompted teachers in the campus to intervene and douse the conflict between the two groups.
Sources said that some students from both sides later held a protest demonstration in-front of administrative block of NIT and sought attention of Authorities against the accused students from both sides. This is first of its kind of incident that has happened in Kashmir in recent times as earlier most of times Kashmiri Students studying in other states of country would complaint harassment by students from other states over cricket matches played between India and Pakistan. Taking cognizance of the matter authorities at NIT ordered closure of the Hazratbal campus till further orders and asked students to vacate the hostels in view of the indiscipline created by them.
