Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 1: The senior officials of Power Development Department Jammu had to eat humble pie in a public meeting called by Chairman J&K Electricity Regulatory Commission (JKERC) to deliberate on the proposal to increase power tariff by 12%.
Sources informed the Early Times that Chairman J&K Electricity Regulatory Commission (JKERC) Basharat Ahmad Dhar had called a meeting few days ago on the request of Power Development Department at his office in which various stakeholder organizations including Chamber of Commerce and Industries Jammu, Accountability and Transparency Forum etc. were present in the meeting.
"In the meeting Chairman JKERC asked for the suggestions from the stakeholders on the proposal of PDD for increasing power tariff by 12% giving the plea that Department is suffering huge revenue loss every year and in order to compensate the loss, department had no choice but to enhance power consumption charges which was out rightly objected by the public members," they said.
They further informed that even Chairman JKERC Basharat Ahmad Dhar took serious note of the proposal and pulled up the officials of PDD for not taking corrective measures to stop power pilferage and allegations of corruption against the department due to which the department is suffering continuous revenue loss. The stakeholders accused the PDD of not disclosing the consumers' identity with proper and exact residential address in its website which creates doubts on the intentions of the department.
Stakeholders also raised objection on the revenue loss records shown by the Department saying that why department shows total loss rather it should disclose the loss divisions wise so that one should know that which division is having maximum revenue loss and pilferage at high rate as there are many divisions where revenue collection is most high than other divisions. They asked the department to bring in public domain that how much power was supplied to Srinagar division and Jammu division and status of revenue collection division wise and electricity connection number and their sanction load must be displayed at the gate /doors of all the consumers so that common person can know how much load connection one has taken and practically consumption.
The members of Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Jammu put forth their suggestions asserting that instead of hiking power tariff, PDD should take some corrective measures by putting accountability of the concerned XEn of the division who must be liable to make up the losses and revenue generation.
They further adding that department should take action against the other government departments which have not paid their electricity bills to the tune of lakhs of rupees.
Chairman JKERC also approved the views and suggestions put forth by the various stakeholders in the meeting and reprimanded PDD for not working on the streamlining the functioning of the department .
