Tangmarg-Babareshi road, a safe ground for dumping of garbage | | | S Tahir-ul Haq Early Times Report GULMARG, Apr 25: Despite earning revenue from the tourists visiting this bowl shaped valley the concerned authorities are yet to act and remove piles of garbage dumped near Tangmarg, the gateway to Gulmarg. A frequent visitor observed that they were shocked to find huge mounds of garbage dumped inside the forests in Tangmarg-Babareshi. "All types of trash including polythene bags, plastic bottles, food and other rotten items lie scattered along in this stretch of forest located on the right side which is one kilometer away from the Tangmarg main market," said the visitor adding that it is really disheartening that the tourist spots are so dirty. Sources informed Early Times that all the garbage that emerges from the hotels, restaurants and shops is dumped by the local municipal committee. The garbage is left to rot among the tall pine and lush green forests. "The Tourism Department and Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA) has failed to put the things in order at their own places. Despite spending crores of rupees on organizing special events in other states and countries to attract tourists in this so called place, Kashmir which was being considered as paradise on this earth has no more remained so," said sources. Fayaz Ahmad, a local of Tangmarg said the plastic waste is harmful for the flora and fauna there. The signs of deterioration are quite evident at the dumping site as many trees have started dying. Such non scientific disposal of waste has started taking toll on the environment here and the stink is spread over the large area, he said. Environmentalists believe that the menace of environmental pollution has been haunting the human world since early times and is still growing due to excessive growth in developing countries like India. The huge mounds of plastic waste littering forests in this state, especially tourist places like Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg are mainly dumped by tourists is affecting wildlife, even could causes deaths, environmentalists asserted. Irony of the fact is that the state government has miserably failed to put in place basic sanitation facilities here on various tourists spots across the Kashmir valley. Many hotels and shops have surfaced here to cater to the rising demand of tourists, but most of them don't have any proper waste disposal mechanism in place. While as one cannot deny the fact that, GDA and Tourism department is spending huge sums on advertisements through print and electronic media to attract tourists from across the globe, but they have failed to maintain the pristine glory of tourist spots across the valley. |
