IIT Jammu unlikely to become functional from upcoming session | | | Akshay Azad Early Times Report jammu, Apr 25: The budding students of Jammu region are likely to wait for another year as the proposed prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is unlikely to become functional from this session too, due to failure of authorities to arrange accommodation. Sources informed Early Times that IIT was sanctioned for Jammu in the month of July 2014 and it was announced that it would start functioning from the session 2015-16 but as per the ground situations, it would unlikely to start functioning from session 2016-17, which is to start after nearly two months. "IIT is a central institution for which state government is to provide free of cost land and other basic amenities including water, electricity roads etc but the responsibility of development of campus and starting admission process is in the hands of Union government", sources said. Only two months are left for beginning of new session, sources said, but so far there was no accommodation created by Central agency and in short of accommodation, there are very slim chances that it will start functioning. Earlier the state government had proposed before the Central agency for a hired accommodation, sources said, to make functional the IIT from the upcoming session. "It was also proposed by state government before Central agency that the old campus building of Jammu University would be provided for IIT but at the eleventh hour the officials of Central team rejected the accommodation", sources said. They further informed that for the first phase, the Central agency has sought a fifty rooms' accommodation for hostel facility in the first phase. "The Central agency has now decided to create makeshift accommodations (fabricated structures) in the proposed site at Jagti Nagrota, where 159 acres of land has been acquired by JK Higher Education department", sources said. Sources further informed that only two months were left for new session and in such a short period of time, it was impossible to create even makeshift accommodation and given such circumstances, there were remote possibilities of making the IIT functional. "The state higher education government has almost done its work by taking possession of 159 acres of land from Forest department and by releasing the necessary funding for creation of other facilities", sources said. Pertinently, as per estimates, each IIT would entail an investment of around Rs 1,800 crore. The 16 existing IITs now offer 10,000 B Tech seats. The strength is likely to go up to 10,500 next year with the establishment of the new IITs in the country. |
