Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 25: Amid tall claims of transparency and accountability, Patients at the Premier healthcare institute, SKIMS, Srinagar continue to suffer as Doctors risking lives of poor people are yet to shun use of Expired surgical equipments and consumables. Senior Doctors wishing anonymity of their names told Early Times that in a shocking case of negligence and lawlessness, authorities at SKIMS are yet to stop selling Expired surgical equipments and consumables to poor patients. Pertinently the massive scam of use expired surgical equipments by Doctors and paramedical staff at SKIMS surfaced few days back and received wide spread criticism for authorities at the helm of affairs in media and on social Networking sites. Sources said that one particular corrupt team of Doctors and Paramedical staff of the institute without any fear of authorities and care for patients re-sterilize, re-label expired stocks and then put on sale at the drug counter to even critical patients with impunity. They said that two member team authorized to 'probe' the matter by Authorities after receiving criticism from public circles was nothing more than attention divert phenomenon as nothing has changed and sale and use of expired surgical equipments goes unabated. "It is impossible to add shelf life to Expired surgical equipments by mere sterilization and re-labeling as some Doctors and their associates in operation theatres do here to fetch money from patients."One Doctor Said Sources said that the issue came to fore after a patient who after operation developed complications and the matter finally ended up with his death. One Senior Doctor said that after the death of one of his patients post operation he on inquiring reasons of death from his subordinates was informed about the use expired equipments. He said that he personally brought the matter in the notice of higher ups and was initially satisfied with the argument that incident had happened due to an error but was later surprised to know about the development of use and sale of expired surgical equipments in the institute. Sources said that surgical equipments and consumables like vericeal-band Endoscopy Band, Platelet Theresis Set, and Prolene Mesh are being sold beyond their expiry date to innocent patients to fetch money from them. Official sources said that a team from the state's Drug controller Department too visited the institute few days back to get a firsthand account of the development but were unable to find out surgical equipment and consumables already expired or which are at the verge of expiry. After widespread condemnation and Criticism from people, The Departmental enquiry announced almost three ways back is yet to fix the responsibility of sale of expired surgical equipments and consumables at SKIMS. Immediately after the scam had surfaced, the officials at the helm of aafairs according to sources weaved a burglary theory in the institute's drug Store to destroy the records and bury proofs. Repeated attempts to contact BJP Minister for Health and medical education, Bali Bhagat went in vain as he did not pick up the phone. |
