Mehbooba 'warns' BJP on 370 | | | Early Times Report jammu, Apr 25: Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has issued a veiled threat to the BJP to not resort to judicial path for challenging Article 370. She had said that such attempts disturb the peace in the state and also sends wrong signals. Mehbooba made this statement at a conference in Delhi in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Justice of India Justice TS Thakar. The CM said that such attempts of challenging the constitutional special status given by the constitution of India disturbs peace and also to an extent discredits mainstream parties in the state to which voters had reposed faith in the elections. Mehbooba Mufti made this blunt statement as this issue was a reason of worry for the PDP. The party was from the very start not comfortable with the BJP taking judicial route to challenge Article 370. The first such attempt was made by a BJP leader in the initial phase of the PDP-BJP government when a think tank affiliated with the Sangh Parivar filed petition challenging the Art 35-A. It was a careful and calculated stroke by the party as this article is deemed to given constitutional cover to the Art 370 and there is strong opinion that if this is challenged and stuck down by the judicial process than the objective of the Sangh parivar could be achieved. It evoked strong reactions from the Valley and gave discomfiting moments to the PDP. The petition is still pending in the court. The second attempt was the made by the national executive member of the BJP, Farooq Khan, to challenge the separate flag of the state. Though this writ was filed only after HC bench in Srinagar had said that Art 370 is permanent. This challenging of the separate flag of the state by its own coalition partner was very disturbing for the PDP. The PDP couldn't accept that its own coalition partner and a member of national executive member could be in front of this writ. The PDP even then had made it clear to the BJP that it's not acceptable, but now with the CM making it clear in front of the PM she has drawn the red line and it's a very serious statement. |
