Weather remains pleasant, mercury recorded below normal | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Apr 25: Pleasant weather continued to greet people in the Kashmir valley this Spring, when heat wave coupled with shortage of water has claimed hundreds of lives in different parts of the country. Leh at minus 0.7 degrees Celsius was coldest followed by Gulmarg in the region. Mercury remained below normal though sun was out with icy cold winds in the Kashmir valley, where weather is expected to remain dry during the next week. People continued to wear sweaters and jackets in Srinagar, where the minimum and minimum temperature during the past 24 hours remained three to four degrees below normal. A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that weather will remain dry in Jammu and Kashmir during the next seven days, including today, a great news for farmers who have suffered due to late snowfall, rain and hailstorm, damaging fruit and vegetable crops, particularly in south Kashmir. Gulmarg, a famed ski resort, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, recorded lowest minimum and maximum temperatures during the past 24 hours. However, the minimum temperature witnessed some improvement though it was still below normal. Against yesterday's minus 1.6 degrees, it was 1.1 degrees, two notches below normal. The maximum temperature yesterday was 6.8 degrees, more than 6 notches below normal. However, snow on slopes in the main town has melted but the upper reaches remained under blanket of white powder, much to the delight of tourists and skiers. Pahalgam, recorded 1.6 degree minimum temperature against yesterday's minus 0.3 degree when the normal is 3 degrees during this period of the season. The maximum temperature yesterdays there was16.8 degree, more than a notch below normal. The maximum and minimum temperatures at Qazigund, Kokernag in south Kashmir and Kupwara in north also recorded two to four degree below normal. People in Srinagar woke up to yet another pleasant morning with sun out though cold winds also continued. Despite sunny day the maximum temperature was 20 degrees, two notches below normal in Srinagar, where majority roads remained damaged, badly affecting pedestrian and vehicular movement. However, the authorities have now started repair work, particularly on roads being used by VIP as the Darbar Move, seat of the government will reopen on May 9 in the summer capital after functioning from Jammu for six winter months. Met spokesman said the minimum temperature has witnessed surge in the city and settled at 6 degrees, still three notches below normal. He said the sky would be mainly clear and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 23 degrees and 7 degrees respectively during the next 24 hours in Srinagar. Leh witnessed drop in the minimum temperature and was coldest in the region. Against yesterday's 3.4 degree, it was minus 0.7 degrees while at border town of Kargil it remained unchanged at 1.5 degrees. The sky would be mainly clear the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 17 degrees and 3 degrees respectively at Leh during the next 24 hours. |
