Rhetoric, not conviction, thy name is Raina | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 4: BJP MLA from Nowshera, Ravinder Raina has torn into Minister of State for External affairs, Gen (retd) V K Singh for the BJP government's U-turn on Hurriyat leaders. He dismissed Singh's statement as "irrelevant". Raina is known for raking controversies to remain in the news. Taking on VK Singh, Raina said that the Hurriyat leaders have no role in the Indo-Pak talks and that elected representatives of the people in Jammu and Kashmir alone have role in the talks. "Political leaders of state, including Farooq Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah, Nirmal Singh, Sajjad Lone, Ghulam Nabi Azad have role in talks as they are elected representatives," Raina was quoted as saying in Rajouri while reacting to the statement of VK Singh in the Parliament. Statement of VK Singh has triggered a fierce debate in the political circles with all the non-BJP parties criticizing the BJP's Pakistan and Kashmir policy. Last week, VK Singh had in a written statement informed the Parliament that "since the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the Union of India and these so-called Kashmiri 'leaders' (read Hurriyat leaders) are Indian citizens, there is no bar on their meetings with representatives of any country in India". Earlier, the stand of the BJP Government was that it will not allow talks between Hurriyat leaders and Pakistani leaders. In fact, New Delhi cancelled talks with Pakistan twice following meetings between the Hurriyat leaders and Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit. The BJP Government used to say that the Jammu and Kashmir issue was bilateral and it will not allow any third player to participate in the Indo-Pak talks on Kashmir. From what he said it was clear that Raina, like others in the BJP, including ministers in the state and at the centre, doesn't know what he says. The fact that he used the word talks only established that he, like others in the BJP, considers J&K not a settled issue, which is not the case. Jammu and Kashmir is a settled issue and it was settled almost 70 years ago by Maharaja Hari Singh, who alone had the power to decide the fate of his state in terms of the constitutional law on the subject. Yes, there is a dispute between India and Pakistan and the dispute is over the Jammu and Kashmir territories like PoJK and Gilgit Baltistan which Pakistan illegally occupied in 194701948. The BJP MLA not only exposed himself and his lack of understanding, but he also shocked the people of Jammu region, when he reportedly tried to appease a senior BJP leader by claiming that he is a true representative of the people of the region. He didn't consider any other member of the BJP fit for representing aspirations of the people of Jammu province. His pining of faith in the NC's owners and separatists like Sajad Lone further exposed the ideological bankruptcy of the BJP in the sense that while the NC leaders are known for their insistence on pre-1953 position or semi-independence, Sajad Lone is a known votary of nationhood status for the entire Jammu and Kashmir State, as also for a solution that is acceptable to the majority community. He belongs to a party which invariably termed these leaders as anti-Jammu, and even anti-national. Indeed, people of Jammu committed a blunder when they returned to the assembly those whose stand on Jammu and Kashmir was unambiguous and those who turned out to be agents of Kashmiri leadership. |
