Single doctor runs Pahalgam Civil Hospital | Staff constraint jeopardizes patient care | | Saahil Suhail
Early Times Report
Pahalgam, May 6: Despite witnessing heavy rush of tourists and Amarnath pilgrims, government, this world famous tourist resort is still without a fully equipped hospital. Pahalgam Civil Hospital, actually allopathic dispensary till last year, was upgraded into a Primary Health Centre in 2015; however the hospital is still manned by a single doctor. According to officials, some doctors from the block are deputed during summers on temporary arrangement. Dearth of doctors, machinery and inadequate facilities has worried the sitting MLA and civil society groups in Pahalgam. They say that the Pahalgam Primary Health Center also exposes the tall claims of the government of revamping the health department besides providing better facilities to the tourists and pilgrims. MLA Pahalgam, Altaf Ahmad Kaloo, who on Friday chaired a meeting of several civil society groups and trade unions at Pahalgam, asked government to pay immediate attention towards the hospital and take all measures to ensure that no single tourist or local resident suffers. Block Medical officer Saller Dr Tula Singh told Early Times that hospital has sanctioned staff of 2 doctors but only one is working while as the other post lies vacant. "It is too difficult to manage the situation. To cope up, most of the time we depute doctors working in other PHC's at Pahalgam hospital," he said. Block Medical Officer informed that hospital has no female doctor or gynecologist. He said that sanctioned staff of the hospital includes, two senior Pharmacists, one female multi-purpose worker, one driver and nine Nursing orderlies. He said that Hospital also lacks machinery for conducting USG tests. "The hospital also doesn't have Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance," he said. Mushtaq Pahalgmi, who heads coalition of Unions, rued the inattentive attitude of government and health department in particular towards this grave issue. "We keep highlighting such grave issues but the officials at the helm of affairs continue to ignore our pleas," he said. The PHC caters to the population of the upper areas of Frislan, Aru, Mandilan, Ganeshbal, Mamal, Lidru and other areas too but the residents say due to the dearth of staff and machinery, the hospital, hardly serves their purpose. They said that they are being forced to go to local medicates and some doctors who take hefty money for the consultation. Residents said that a brigade of doctors and para-medical staff is being deputed in the hospital only during Yatra period while for rest of the year only two doctors manage the hospital.
