Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 18: The unrepaired roads and bunds are making the residents living along Jehlum embankments to haunt with the horrid memories of September 2014 Floods but the authorities unconcerned are seemingly least bothered about the genuine apprehensions of populace prone to the floods. The residents who witnessed worst ever flood in September 2014 claimed that the breaches developed in bunds are yet to be repaired at many places in general and particularly from the stretch between Batwara to Lal Mandi. They alleged the authorities concerned barring some minor repairs have done nothing in this regard. The aggravated inhabitants who feel apprehended over their security accused the contractors assigned for repairing deluge hit roads and bunds of leaving the renovation work halfway while the authorities concerned are unmoved over the safety of the people prone to the any eventuality. "On one hand floods proved disastrous for one and all while on the other hand black moles within the system took chances to take undue advantage of natural calamity, some locals resented. Talking to Early Times, one resident from Rajbagh namely Gulam Jeelani said, "Let the concerned MLA Altaf Bukhari visit his constituency and take the stock of situation at ground realities i.e. what sort of work has been done till date. Expressing concerns over the issue, he said that renovation of deluge hit bund has been done in extremely haphazard manner with deep potholes and eroded bunds itself speak volumes about the insincerity and ineptitude of contractors who undertook the said works. "We are human as security of family is utmost concern for us, we are not demanding moon form the government but urging it to make these contractors accountable for their work, he said, adding, "any sane man can see overall improvement of roads after floods just through a leisure walk along Jhelum." Another local resident Abdul Khaliq Tunda a resident of Zero Bridge Bund mocked the shoddy approach of the authorities and said, "the situation on grounds is writing on wall which shows their (authorities) halfhearted measures in repairing deluge hit roads in low lying areas. He also accused the government for taking people for a ride saying "people even in this jet-age are living a nomadic life. One can only curse this sick system for which has never been changed" "Roads were macadamized, but their condition is as same as the floods left in 2014, roads have developed deep holes which are yet to be filled and we are quite apprehensive that a minor rainfall this year will play a spoilsport," he said. |
