| Traffic deptt treats women cops like 'slaves' | | | Raj Sandeep

Jammu, May 17: Topping all the records of harassment to women cop on duty, the callousness of Traffic Department can be fathomed from the fact that the women constables deputed in police traffic wing have been made to serve under pressing conditions while assisting the male cops making their life hell either to perform or perish under unfavourable circumstances.
Sources informed Early Times that in order to facilitate male members in Traffic Department and assist them on traffic duty in Jammu city, the IRP Battalion 15 of police has deputed about 35 lady constables to help male traffic cops handle rising cases of traffic violations by women driving two wheelers and cars etc in the city. Accordingly these lady cops have been deployed at various locations with a group of 4 to 6 women at Jewel Chowk, Bikram Chowk, Satwari, (Gole market) Gandhinagar main Chowk, Amphalla, Janipur and many areas of Jammu.
Explaining the inhospitable and tormenting conditions in which these lady cops have been landed into, the sources said that male members in traffic wing are under instructions from top traffic cop to keep the lady cops on tenterhooks while on duty and do not spare them for any laxity with some of women cops reporting for duty little late being subjected to harassment and threatened of dire consequences.
Sources further informed that the aggrieved lady cops approached D.I.G. Jammu apprising him of the problem being faced by them.
Castigating the insensitive attitude of traffic department , the sources told that there is no provision of toilet and changing clothes facilities which are primarily needed for lady cops to perform their duties in traffic department more efficiently and effectively from 9 AM till evening and have to remain all the day on the road managing traffic and handling traffic rules violators with no identified place for them to have breathing time while as their male members using corners to ease them and sometimes seen sitting in tea stalls and other shops in city for getting some respite from scorching heat.
Some of the women cops explaining their ordeal of working in traffic department for which they are not accustomed to, rued that whenever they feel tired and take the shelter of sun shade near duty location, they are severely scolded using rough languages whenever found by arrogant and unsympathetic traffic top cop who, the sources told, seems to be averse and hate womenfolk for the undisclosed reasons who facing great mental agony and harassment in traffic department without knowing his agenda other than official work.
The sources further said that whenever these lady cops approach their Commandant Anita Sharma of 15 Battalion explaining their problems, she allegedly disposes them off directing that she cannot do anything.
