Don't sensationalize funerals: KPs tell mediamen | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 18: The recent statement of Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik that separate colonies for Kashmiri Pandits would be opposed tooth and nail by majority community had its first fall-out today in the summer capital of the state. A group of Kashmiri Pandits today objected to the presence of press photographers and videographers during the last rites of an elderly Kashmiri Pandit woman who passed away earlier in the day. This group of Kashmiri Pandits accused mediamen of spreading canards under the title of 'journalism'. As soon as the news of passing of an elderly Kashmiri Pandit woman spread some of the media men rushed to the Barbarshah area in order to cover the funeral and other allied formalities. However, to their utter dismay and shock, the members of the fourth estate were countered by a group of Kashmiri Pandits who were all fire against them. "Why have you come to this place. We don't want any coverage in the media. You have been exploiting us for all these years, but this time around we won't allow this to happen. You people have portrayed us in a negative way all these years," said the group of Kashmiri Pandits. The media men tried their best to motivate the 'irate' group of Kashmiri Pandits so that they could carry out their professional obligation. However, they failed to do so and in fact had to face more wrath from their opponents and many of them turned red faced on this occasion. "You people take pictures and record videos and then spread the message that Kashmiri Muslims performed the last rites of a Kashmiri Pandit. How can you do so and how can you misinform the people living in the different parts of the world," said a group of angry Kashmiri Pandits. As the situation started to get out of control the other members of Kashmiri Pandit community including some senior citizens chipped in and cooled the tempers. Following this there was peace in the area and the media men were allowed to carry out their professional obligations. However, by this time most of photographers and videographers had left the place and as such they could not cover the funeral of the elderly Kashmiri Pandit woman. |
