Let Pak give peace a chance to mend fences with India | | | While activities of terrorists have witnessed an upward trend in the valley in the past few months, borders too have to some extent remained active during this time, with the Pak border troops resorting to intermittent ceasefire violations. Is it possible for New Delhi to reopen the channels of dialogue with Islamabad under these circumstances? And, despite these provocations, India has never remained opposed to talks. But when one notices increase in ceasefire violations along the LoC, intentions of Pakistan become clear. India and Pak troops exchanged firing on LoC in Uri sector of Kashmir. Defence sources said Pakistan troops violated ceasefire along the LoC in Uri sector but no damage was done. It has been observed that Pak troops resort to unprovoked firing along the LoC and the IB only to facilitate infiltration by terrorists waiting across the borders for an opportune moment to enter Indian territory to indulge in innocent killings and other terror incidents. In the last one year alone, Pak border troops have violated ceasefire over 70 times. Most of the infiltration attempts made by terrorists under the cover of firing during this time were foiled by alert Indian troops. It has been the result of specific inputs from the intelligenbce agencies and other civilians that security forces have succeeded in eliminating scores olf militants in various parts of the valley. If reports are to be relied upon, militants seem to have carved out their hideouts in various areas of south Kashmir, especially Pulwama, Tral, Shopian, Kulgam and some parts of north Kashmir, especially in the pockets of Baramulla, Kupwara, Handwara and Sopore. The latest report says that at least two militants were killed in two operations in south Kashmir's Shopian and north Kashmir's Kupwara district. An encounter started in Shopian district's Pehlipora area, around 52 km away from Srinagar, lateMonday evening when security forces laid a cordon. In the exchange of fire, one militant, identified as Farooq Sheikh, was killed. Police believe that more militants have gone into hiding in the area and a massive hunt has been launched to eliminate them. In a separate operation, an unidentified militant was killed in Kupwara, around 90 km north of Srinagar. A gunfight erupted in Kupwara's Chowkibal area on Tuesday morning. Two villages of Zonrishi and Marsari remained under the security forces' surveillance following a tip-off about the presence of militants. On Monday, one local militant died after he fell into a gorge and two were arrested when they were trying to cross the LoC into PoK from Pir Panchal's Poonch district. This indicates that Pakistan won't stop sending terrorists into the Indian territory. It wants to keep the otherwise flagging militancy alive in J&K. Pakistan should know that new equations among countries are taking shape. It will be a mistake on the part of China and Pakistan if they believe that India is functioning in isolation. In order to meet India's defence preparedness in the shape of its plan to upgrade its missile and nuclear weapon technology including interceptors, Pakistan has stated seeking military aid from China. Islamabad should also know it that once Pakistan falls in the lap of China, India may not have any other option but to seek assistance from the US and other developed countries for upgrading its war machinery. It is now for Pakistan to make a choice between promoting cordial ties with India or adopt belligerent postures against India.Well, belligerent postures against India may not help Pakistan to promote peace in the South Asian region for which it is clamouring day in, day out. And, Islamabad should know that when New Delhi is ready for bilateral parleys, it also ought to respond. If Pakistan reciprocates India's goodwill gesture, it may promote cordial ties. Pakistan should know it for certain that by raking up Kashmir issue, it will only provoke India. This is what happened on Tuesday when Pakistan conveyed its concern to the UN over the depiction of Jammu and Kashmir in India's draft geospatial information bill but Delhi has made it clear that Islamabad has no say in the country's internal legislative process. These things should be taken note of by Pakistan if it wants to mend fences with India. |
