Land mafia encroaches upon Govt land in Rajouri | | | Ajay Sharma
Early Times Report
Jammu, May 28: Land owned by the state government in Trayath tehsil of Rajouri district over certain khasras has turned a 'greener pasture' in the literal sense of the word for many people who are 'reaping its harvest' in commercial sense, thanks to connivance with officials in the Revenue Department on account of which they have made fortunes during the past few years. Sources said it is a powerful group of people who have developed a nexus with officials of Revenue department from tehsildars to patwaries and girdawars in grabbing the state land without resistance from any quarter. This group also enjoys patronage of some high profile politicians of the area besides Police officers which is why hundreds of shops have come up during the last 10 years in a steady and silent manner. This group of land mafia have encroached in particular khasra number 945, 943, 951 and 807 on which 300-320 shops have come up, sources said. Sources further said this group in connivance with the Revenue officials have fixed rates for these shops which instead of determining as per the market rate is quite high for a reason. A good percentage which comes to a huge amount is given to the Revenue officials as their 'share' for facilitating the deals in violation of norms and laid out procedures, said the sources adding that it doesn't pinch the shop owners as their chain of making money doesn't end here. If the deal is settled at Rs 15 lakh per shop as per the location, Rs 3 lakh goes to Revenue department officials, sources said, adding that the owners have been earning huge benefits through resale to third parties. While all this has been happening over the years under the very nose of the Revenue Department with resistance or opposition elusive from any quarter, not to speak of action in any manner, it has become a lucrative business for many people of the area including powerful politicians, ex MLAs and their personal staff. Those in the 'business' have made their fortunes on the state government land in Rajouri district in a brazen manner, grabbing and encroachment being the thumb rule in it. ET tried to contact DC Rajouri Shabir Bhat to know the government version in the matter but he did not respond to repeated calls. |
