To please MLA, PDD stores electric poles outside his house | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 28: In a bid to please a Srinagar MLA, the Power Development Department (PDD) stored a truckload of electric poles right outside his residence so that he could distribute the lot as per his "sweet will and wish." Official sources said the MLA, who enjoys patronage of a senior leader, got the metal poles stocked outside his house "lest the PDD distributes them without his consent. " The allegedly unlawful dumping of electric poles on a road in Lawaypora locality of west City triggered public resentment with people complaining that they were being forced to be loyal to a particular political party to get the poles installed in their area. They accused the Chief Engineer PDD of playing "yes minster" at the hands of politicians only to put the common masses to trouble. "We had gone to the Chief Engineer's office at Jehangir Chowk with request to get electric poles installed in the area but we were told to visit the residence of the concerned MLA with a disclaimer that only he can help us out. This is a typical case of political patronage," the complainants told Early Times. The complainants said even though they approached the MLA, he declined to help them out saying "You didn't vote for me." Failing to get any respite, the aggrieved people finally approached the office of District Commissioner Srinagar, Farooq Ahmed Lone. "Though he assured us action, there was no breakthrough," the locals said. "While our grievance remained unheard, most of the electric poles disappeared from outside his house as it were taken away by nears and dears of MLA Sahib… Where has this public resource gone needs to be probed because no poles were installed in our colony," the locals asked. They accused the PDD of resorting to political vendetta with the people who did not vote in favour of the particular party. The complainants appealed the deputy chief minister, Dr Nirmal Singh, who is also the power minister, to personally look into the matter as to how the PDD officials were working like "political workers." The MLA, however, denied any "mischief or favouritism" in the stocking of poles outside his house. "These were dumped there around a month ago only because the concerned authorities didn't find any alternative place. The DC office also asked me the same but I clarified that I have nothing to do with the poles," the MLA said. He said the poles were stocked their on the request of the locality people and distributed at that every moment. "It's an old story now," the MLA said. Despite repeated attempts, the Chief Engineer PDD couldn't be contacted for comments. A PDD official posted in Laway Pora said MLA's do have constituency development fund dedicated for public works and that there was no wrong if he took the stock home. |
