Politicians rake up extraneous issue to strengthen their vote bank | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 28: Each political party, whether belonging to the mainstream sector or to the separatists or those sitting on the fence, are in race with one another while registering their presence. Each one is keen to seek strengthening of their vote bank. That is something else if voters feel impressed with the pranks played by the Congress, the National Conference, by the independent legislators or by the separatists. Well to claim that more than 80 per cent people, rather voters, are impressed with the political pranks being played by the political leaders should be quite a false assertion. Yes, they may be raising their hands at a public rally but they keep their choice of voting in favour of this party or that that candidate close to their chest. Politicians in Jammu and Kashmir find no dearth in raking up issues, whether genuine or extraneous, because India and Pakistan have been trying to keep alive the Kashmir issue. Hence if separatists feel that the ground there standing has started slipping they raise pro-Pakistan or self-referendum issues. If the National Conference feels the going difficult it rakes up the issue of restoration of autonomy. If the Congress feels that its vote bank is shrinking it fulminates against the BJP and pledges to support secularism. If the BJP finds erosion in its vote bank it invokes the spirit of full integration of Jammu and Kashmir with rest of the country. It rakes up the issue of abrogation of Article 370. If still it feels its going is tough it supports the idea of grant of citizenship rights to the refugees of West Pakistan. And the ghost of Handwara killings seems to have disturbed a number of politicians, whether belonging to the mainstream or to the separatist camp. The ghost found its presence in the Assembly when the other day the National Conference and the Congress joined hands while protesting against the delay in tabling the report of Handwara killings. Despite the fact that the speaker of the Assembly, Kavinder Gupta, informed the House that the report would be available with the Government within a couple of days, Congress, NC and two other independent legislators kept standing in the well of the House shouting slogans. Both Houses witnessed noisy scenes and ruckus as the National Conference (NC), Congress and others staged a walkout, demanding the report of the probe into civilian killings in Handwara last month and shortage of ration in the state. Soon after the House assembled, members of the NC and Congress raised the issue of Handwara killings, holding placards saying "State terrorism hai hai".Other members, including CPM member MY Tarigami, Engineer Rashid and Hakeem Mohammad Yasin joined the members and sought the government's report on the killings in Handwara. They raised slogans like "qatilon ko pesh karo" as they continued their protest. They entered the well of the House even though Speaker Kavinder Gupta said the inquiry report on Handwara killings would be received within two days Had the National Conference leadership forgotten the killing of 120 people in the clashes and action by the security forces during the summer of 2010 ? It seems so. Had it been alive to this unsavoury incident the NC leaders would have sit silent and not supported the Congress. But it had to do so because it wanted to regain the ground it had lost in 2014 election. Did the separatists forget the number of civilians killed for which these separatists were responsible. Either the people responded to the calls for staging protest rallies given by the separatists or they goaded people to attack the security pickets which resulted in death of several civilians. Had they been aware of their responsibility for being killers they would not have sang the chorus with the NC and the Congress leaders. For others it is Jihad for votes. And for others it is self-rule for strengthening their vote bank. Still for others it is autonomy versus, plebiscite or a ties between self-rule and open borders If Omar Abdullah remained absent from the Assembly during the obituary references he did it with a purpose. He did not want to praise Mufti Sayeed who had died as a senior politician. Omar did so as he did not want to shower any praise on the political wisdom of the Mufti which would have weakened his standing as a working President of the National Conference. |
