Autonomy resolution proves counter productive for NC, leaders in a fix | NC doing 'Jaspal Batti' | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 28: The latest political plank by the opposition national conference in a bid to remain in lime light has surprised many. Party's latest resolution over its autonomy is proving counterproductive for it. Sixteen years after State Legislative Assembly passed the autonomy resolution, which was later rejected by Government of India terming it as 'unacceptable', National Conference has taken the issue back to the Assembly, asking the Government of India to reconsider the resolution passed by the House in 2000. In the resolution, submitted to the NC has urged the House to convey to government to reconsider the autonomy resolution that seeks restoration of pre-1953 position of the state. The Autonomy resolution was passed on June 26, 2000 during National Conference-led government headed by Dr Farooq Abdullah. Though the NC while submitting the resolution in the ongoing session, considers it as a political move, thinking that they will put government in a tight spot, NC itself is caught between the devil and the deep sea. As the national conference has been raising the demand for the restoration of the autonomy during the poll rallies, there are little chances that the party will be able to do that again. Due to the lack of serious approach and desperation to stay in news, NC itself is making its autonomy demand a laughing stock. If the assembly at present rejects the resolution, it would naturally make the entire resolution which was passed in the year 2000 null and void, thus rendering NC orphan of any political demand. "NC has only one thing in is kitty and that is its autonomy resolution- it has been selling it to people from the past 16 years. It is really surprising that the same party is hell bent to make the autonomy resolution a rejected entity," says Amir Qayoom, a research student of political sciences. Meanwhile, a senior NC leader while pleading anonymity said such a resolution submited at present would be no less than a political blunder. "If there is already a resolution in place from the last 15 years, what is the need to bring a new one that too with mere 15 member support- this is insane," he said. Sources meanwhile revealed that the entire national conference camp is these days abuzz with the discussions over its recent proposal. Various leaders have already reprimanded the party over what they termed tantamount to committing political suicide. "We passed autonomy resolution in J&K Assembly in 2000. We are now killing the autonomy resolution by bringing another resolution seeking support for implementation of the autonomy resolution," said a party functionary. It remains to be seen what outcome would there be as the party itself is killing an argument that the autonomy resolution was passed by J&K Assembly as the same Assembly is going to kill "implement autonomy resolution" resolution and thus nullify the earlier resolution. |
