Locals bear brunt as pond goes dry

Udhampur June 20: Ponds in several villages of the district have dried up inconveniencing people who generally are dependent upon these conventional water resources and in a similar case the local pond of Phangial area got dried up resulting into death of large number of fish in the pond.
The villagers traditionally used to get water from the pond for washing clothes and bathing cattle, there is hardly any such activity these days as the water level is drying up speedily due to ongoing heat wave like conditions.
"Some days ago a large number of fish reportedly died in the pond of Phangial area making people to worry about the ground situation and the looming danger of draught like situation, locals said.
Expressing concerns over the issue, Ganesh Kumar local senior Congress Seva Dal leader today staged a protest demonstration against administration and concerning department for not taking any preventive step to save the aquatic life of the pond.
According to locals Deputy Commissioner (DC) Udhampur Neeraj Gupta visited today and reviewed the situation on the ground reality and condition of water level of pond.
He said that the restoration work for the pond will be started soon. He also visited on the another drying up pond situated in nearby location and took stock of the situation.
Genash Kumar apprised the visiting administrative head of district about the condition of the ponds drying up due to non serious attitude of the people at helms of affair.
He also alleged that of the total area of pond i.e. 12kanal and four marla a huge spread of pond has been illegally encroachment by some outsiders and locals with the help of revenue officials.
Seva Dal leader and other prominent citizens of area also urged the DC udhampur to verify the revenue record of the water bodies (ponds) and retrieve the encroached land to maintain the ecological balance of the area.
DC Udhampur assured that the department will verify the revenue record of the pond and retrieve the encroached land and also ensured action against those who had been involved in encroachment of water body.
