JAMMU, June 20: Across the globe World Refugees Day is observed today but the refugees of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK), settled in state in 1947 are a dejected lot as they have accused the government of feeding lies in Assembly.
In the ongoing budget session, the state government on June 15 gave a detailed reply, which is being termed as a volley of lies, by refugee organization, claiming that state government instead of giving anything as relief even gave land on exorbitant rates.
President of MJR-47, Suchwant Singh said that it was very shocking that government brazenly narrate lies and none questioned.
"As per reply in the house, government claimed that Rural DP's were provided cash assistance of Rs.1000/-per family besides in order to rehabilitate them, the government vide order no 486-c of 1954 dated: 07.05.1954 provided families residing in rural areas 4 acres of abi land or 6 acres of Khushki land per units of the family irrespective of size/ strength of family", Suchwant Singh said, adding that it was totally false as Refugees were given ex-gratia grant of Rs. 3500 per family.
He further said out of the Rs. 3500 ex-gratia relief, the State government deducted Rs. 2500 as cost of the land given to refugees and documents bears testimony of the fact. "The state government had given Rs. 1000 as assistance, when we were residing in camps but same amount was repaid by refugees along with interest", Singh claimed, adding that some of the families were given plots in Bakshi Nagar and other city areas, but when the same were regularized on their names, Rs. 2250 was also deducted from the ex-gratia relief given by Union government.
The state government had not given any land or assistance but the land was sold by state government to refugees that too on very exorbitant rates. "In Mid 50's or 60's a 10 Marla plot's cost in Gandhi Nagar was Rs. 500 but state government deduct much higher than the cost for the plots", Singh claimed.
Another member of the MJR-47, Om Parkash Khajuria said that only refugees of 1947 were hardly hit by step-motherly treatment of successive state governments. "Many families were settled in camps and on erstwhile Jammu-Suchetgarh railway line but the houses constructed by hard work of refugees are still not in their name", Khajuria said.
He further said that successive state governments in state neglected refugees' demands and only after the Parliamentary Joint Committee came to know about the plight of refugees, they recommended for a package, which was forwarded by Omar Abdullah led government but so far nothing has been done in the direction.
Suchwant Singh further said that recently Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced Rs. 80,000 Crore package out of which Rs. 2000 Crore for refugees but it was again a jugglery of figures as 5300 families of refugees were not included in the list.
The leaders further claimed that government has been time and again telling lies in the Assembly, which is highest law making body and it was also very much shocking that PDP-BJP led government was also least bothered about our plight.
