Cong taunts BJP, says saffron outfit undermining Jammu's prestige | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 20: It was on June 15 that Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said in Jammu that the "people of Jammu were very secular yet they lacked leadership which could raise the Jammu-specific issues and fulfill the aspirations of the people of Jammu". She had compared the Kashmiri leadership with that of Jammu's and said the Kashmiri leadership was very sensitive to the issues facing the people of Kashmir. BJP "leader" and Minister was present when the Chief Minister commented on the nature of Jammu leadership and had told that he would take her statement in right spirit. What the Chief Minister said had become talk of the town and the general public interpreted the statement in one way or the other. However, one thing that was common was that everyone was critical of the BJP leader. Senior Congress leader Sham Lal Sharma while addressing monthly meeting of Block Congress Committee (BCC), Chowki Choura, lashed out at the Deputy Chief Minister for remaining as a mute spectator when the Chief Minister was making these remarks on leadership issue in his own presence. "Because of lust of power, the BJP leaders are even ready to accept statements which effect the honour and prestige of the people of Jammu before whom they project themselves as so-called champions," Sharma said, and added that there was no dearth of leaders in Jammu region. "There is no dearth of leaders in Jammu region but those who have lust of power and have personal interest are unable to highlight the issues of their region. Such leaders have completely surrendered themselves before PDP and thus bringing disgrace to Jammu," Sharma said, and added that BJP leadership lacked the strength and courage to raise voice of Jammu people, who had given them heavy mandate to safeguard their interests. "All the promises made by the saffron party were proved false and people are now repenting for voting the BJP leaders who have no sense of responsibility and respect towards the needs and sentiments of people of Jammu province," Sham said. What sham said about the BJP appears correct. Indeed, the BJP has failed the people of Jammu province by not projecting the Jammu's cause and obtaining for the region they represent in the assembly what they deserve. The BJP leadership has failed to deliver on all fronts and has not fulfilled even a single promise. Just look at its 2014 vision document and you will find that the BJP did not work on it. The role of the BJP in the assembly has also been disappointing for the people of Jammu province. A couple of party MLAs who did muster courage to highlight some Jammu-specific issues were reportedly snubbed by the party leadership. Take, for example, MLA from Kathua Rajeev Jasrotia and MLC, Ajat Shatru Singh. Rajeev Jasrotia had in the assembly created furore saying Jammu was being treated shabbily, Ajat Shatru Singh had gone to the extent of saying that India was the only country in the world where those demanding independence were being provided foolproof security and whose board and lodging expanses outside the state were also met by the Government of India. Notwithstanding the fact that the Congress had also not done justice to Jammu, the fact remains that the Congress leaders like Mangat Ram Sharma did on occasions locked horn with Kashmiri leaders. And what they did in the cabinet meetings and on the floor of the assembly are on record. |
