Time ripe to mull bringing in Uniform Civil Code: Law panel chief Balbir Singh Chauhan | | | Agencies New Delhi, July 7The time has come to consider introducing the uniform civil code in the country, at least in stages, Law Commission Chairman Justice (retired) Balbir Singh Chauhan told .' Asserting that nothing will be done in a hurry, Chauhan trashed apprehensions raised by spokespersons of some minority communities that a uniform civil code would homogenise or erode minorities. "It by no means will affect the religious faith of any individual," Chauhan said. The commission, responding swiftly to the Narendra Modi government's initiative to explore implementation of the uniform civil code, has already collected relevant material and held a meeting on the contentious issue. The government had asked the commission to examine the matter and submit a report, ET first reported last Friday. Although the Constitution stipulates that the State shall endeavour to secure a uniform civil code for citizens throughout the territory of India, there's been no consensus on implementing a set of common personal laws in place of religion-based rules for property, marriage & divorce, inheritance. |
