Budgam, Chadoora towns need garbage dumping sites | | | Early Times Report Budgam, July 7: With existing garbage dumping sites in Budgam having been fully chocked, locals have urged upon the authorities to urgently identify new dumping sites to provide basic sanitation. Existing garbage dumping site near Budgam town has very less space to accommodate increasing solid waste collected from the 13 municipal wards of the town. According to reports district administration has already identified a place in the outskirts of the town to be used as garbage dumping site, but the locals living around that area are against such move of the Govt. Pertinent to mention that garbage dumping is a serious problem in Budgam district. At a time when the whole country is organizing sanitation programmes under clean India programme "Swach Bharat Mission" , the authorities at the helm of affairs in J&K are pursuing anti environment activities. According to reliable sources the officials of local municipality in Chadoora town are involved in dumping of garbage into the Doodh-Ganga nallah which flows through this town. Irony is that same water is supplied by Public Health Engineering (PHE) department to thousands of people in Budgam as well as Srinagar districts. Locals say that it is not the fault of the municipality officials as Chadoora has no dumping site. Due to increased population, Solid Waste Management (SWM) has been seen as a great challenge in Jammu and Srinagar cities. Huge quantity of garbage gets piled up in these twin cities on daily basis. The way this garbage is stored and disposed off, poses a great threat to our environment. Every day huge amount of garbage which includes biodegradable waste , polythene and even caracass are dumped into Doodh Ganga. Around 4 kms ahead the PHE department lifts the same water and supplied to large population from Kralpora water supply scheme . PHE authorities argue that this water is filtered at Doodh Ganga water filtration plant Kralpora , but what kind of filtration will be possible when there are dead animals and other dangerous substances mixed with this water. Sources said that PHE officials only undertake simple bleaching of water at Kralpora and this diseased water is supplied to as many as 15,000 households. There have been incidents of gastrointestinal infections in the area and its main reason is unhygienic water being supplied from Kralpora water supply plant. Locals have urged upon authorities to come to their rescue. " We appeal Deputy Commissioner Budgam , Chief Engineer PHE , and SSP Budgam to personally visit Budgam , Beerwah and Chadoora towns and see all this mess " said Ajaz Hussain from Budgam. |
